Boku no Hero Academia 14 Review: Villain Alliance, Frog-girl and Pervert Kid

Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 14: Face-Off Against the Unknown

Boku no Hero Academia is a relatively new manga, being only recently translated and whatnot, and I don't think it has too many chapters out even in Japan, but I for one really like it! It's a manga series I got into very recently, no less than a week or so ago, and so far it's great. It's got a nice 'superhero school' concept going on, it's got great art, there's a nice little influx of Western Superhero nods, it's got a nice deal of worldbuilding... I like it!

Not going to go too in-depth into the review, just a cursory thing, since I'm not overtly familiar with a lot of the newly-introduced characters, but I'm going to talk about it nonetheless.

So, picking off from last chapter, what was supposed to be a training session for natural disasters ended up getting gatecrashed by all these prominent supervillains and whatnot. So far I think the two that have been showing up in every scene is this dude with floating disembodied hands all over him who gave us that impressive jump-scare page last chapter, and the giant living shadow bartender dude who seems to function as a portal for the massive army of supervillains. And was that crazy angry-looking beast with a massive jaw and exposed brain one of the three we saw in the villain bar before? Can't remember.

They're here to take down All Might... who happens to be absent, but since they're evil and all they decide to just fuck up the little kiddies trying to train. Eraserhead engages the Villain Alliance (that's what they're called, really) and just kicks all sorts of ass as we get shown how he uses his Quirk-cancelling abilities effectively with his dark glasses and these crazy mummy whip-things. Pretty cool ability, and there are apparently several divisions of Quirks: Mutants, Emitter and Transformation get brought up, and apparently Eraserhead can't erase Mutant-types, like this giant four-armed rock-man with an executioner mask which he just beats up and klonks into another dude's head with his mummy whips.

(Eraserhead's cool.)

However, crazy scary hand-dude, who's apparently calling the shots, sends the dark shadow dude to attack the children to draw in All Might. Eraserhead and Mr. 13 note that shadow-dude seems to be the one who possesses the biggest threat, and there's a bit of monologuing going on. Bakugo and another student tries to attack shadow-dude, but of course, being students, they're useless against these professional super-awesome villains. They don't outright kill them off despite what the dialogue might imply, though, since shadow-dude just sends everyone off into the disaster theme park thing.

Mr. 13 is kind of useless, isn't he? Though since he can't create a black hole without, like, destroying every single one of the students, I don't think there's much he can do.

Midoriya gets sent into the Flood Zone and immediately gets accosted by this Ripjaw-esque Fishman, but he gets kicked right in the face by the adorable Frog-girl, Asui Tsuyu. Tsuyu kicks Ripjaw in the face and grabs Midoriya with her tongue, as well as the little perverted short kid whose name is apparently Mineda. Who wears some kind of gigantic metal diaper. I like Tsuyu! She's fun, how she always has that big-eyed expression on her face. She also 'does whatever a frog can'.

Like to see these kids fight against the lower-ranked villains, and while I think it would be a bit too realistic for most of them to actually be able to put up a proper fight, I think they can take out some of the grunts, and hold out until the actual big-shots like All Might, that giant girl, wood-man and the rest arrive.

Midoriya and Tsuyu discuss about things a bit about how yesterday's break in might just be the villains just monitoring stuff. Mineda goes all 'All Might is going to beat them all up' but Tsuyu, smart girl that she is, points out that they wouldn't go through all the trouble if they didn't have a countermeasure against All Might. Mineda gets completely spooked, and apparently the boat they are hiding in gets kind of barricaded by Ripjaw-the-Fishman and a bunch of other aquatic villains.

There's an odd moment where Midoriya thinks about the reason why the villains want to kill All Might (which is an odd thing to think about, they're the bad guys) and apparently there's some mysterious thing behind All Might's powers and whatnot. Midoriya rallies Tsuyu and Mineda up with a speech.

We then get a bit of a montage on the other kids. Fire-and-Ice dude is apparently making a relatively good show of himself, easily freezing two of the villain grunts, and I can see him being one of the more powerful students. Bakugo and another dude seems to be doing quite well, and the smart-girl-with-extreme-cleavage whose name I forgot can apparently generate swords from her body. We see Uraraka and creepy-black-eyed-kid hiding behind Ida and the weird dude with wings that can transform into body parts facing off against Shadow Villain, while Scary Hand dude is approaching Eraserhead.

Not sure if I'll review every single chapter of Boku no Hero Academia, but this one's a pretty neat and good chapter.
