Nanatsu no Taizai 253 Review: Escanor's Origin

Nanatsu no Taizai, Chapter 253: Lost Grace

This week and the next's manga reviews will be... irregular. I will post things in this blog that I've already prepared, but I don't really have the time to write up long, detailed reviews regularly, and better to have something decent prepared instead of a half-assed one, right?

Anyway, this chapter reveals that Escanor's power comes from the fact that he somehow inherited the sunshine powers of the dead archangel, Mael... something that Ludoshel only realizes this chapter when Escanor's power has increased. The two of them exchange some blows, with Ludoshel initially having the advantage in speed, but Escanor just swaggering it up like the sin of pride he is ("It pleases me when lesser beings lookup on me", he says, to the great archangel) ends up melding Ludoshel's sword.

That's... that's something, all right. We all suspected Escanor to be a member of the goddess clan or be related to them in one way or another since he's the only sin to be conceivably a member of the goddess clan... and it's really neat. Ludoshel doesn't seem intent on killing Escanor quite just yet because they are kinda allies, but the confrontation was certainly tense, and most importantly... it gives us Escanor's origin. It's a bit low-key how they actually ended up revealing this to us. It's a bit odd where the placement of this revelation happens, but it does sort of fit with the focus that the archangels have been getting in recent chapters. Definitely a "hype chapter", as the kids call it these days, and one that answers a lot of questions.
