One Piece 904 Review: Top-hats And Sunglasses

One Piece, Chapter 904: The Entrance of the Revolutionary Army Commanders

Yeah, this was... a pretty hype-inducing chapter, isn't it? The Revolutionary Army has been built up for years and year, and finally their involvement in larger world politics instead of "Ivankov shows up as an ally for this arc" or "Sabo pops up and fights in the background". It's pretty neat!

The chapter's cover story is Orlumbus resigning from his kingdom, the ''Standing" Kingdom? It's neat. Orlumbus is one of the characters who we know the least about among Luffy's new subordinates, and I do like that Orlumbus's cover story isn't just going to be a glorified character model montage as it was with Hajrudin's.

The actual chapter is a check-in on all the Revolutionaries, though. We first check in with Ivankov and his Okama army in Kamabakka Kingdom, who is impressed of Luffy and Sanji's recent deeds. We also have confirmation that, no, Germa is not part of the World Government anymore, sealing the nail in Germa's involvement in any arcs in the near future. Dragon, Sabo and Koala are also around, with Sabo grinning all day thanks to reading about Luffy, like a proud big brother. Sabo notes that the Four Executives of the Revolutionary Army are gathering because the Revolutionaries are planning to declare war against the World Government.

And we get to see all four of them at once, in some random town in the Lulusia kingdom, where some random jackass called Pinkbeard (Colour-Beard is apparently a running theme now), a subordinate of Blackbeard, is doing actual pirating and stealing the Celestial Gold they are supposed to offer to the Celestial Dragons. I think this is the first we've heard of the Celestial Dragons demanding gold or death? Doesn't make them any better than Big Mom, then.

And then, of course, the Executives arrive. First up is Morley, who causes the ground itself to wobble around before he and his giant trident bloops out of the ground. He's a giant, but also probably an okama? Or just flamboyant? He does have the under-eye eyelashes that most okamas in the world of One Piece has, and he apparently uses the feminine form of "I" and asks the pirates if they have a crush on him. He's noted to be a Devil Fruit user, and in addition to causing the ground to wobble, he's able to use the trident to push the ground like a carpet to knock people backwards. Sort of like Senor Pink's ability, but a lot more far-reaching?

The second general, Belo Betty, is a lady who wears an open shirt (which is going to drive the fans wild) and calls all the civilians trash for not standing up, and has the ability to rally the angry townspeople up to rise up with her Cheer-Cheer Fruit, causing their muscles to balloon up and giving them the strength to beat up the Pinkbeard pirates themselves. It's a very appropriate power for a member of a Revolutionary Army to have, for sure, to literally inspire people and cause their righteous anger to manifest in strength. She's sort of like an aura-granting character in a video game, and that's pretty cool.

The third general, Lindbergh, is this weird dude with whiskers who bounces around on a jetpack, and apparently fights with his inventions. Beyond his cheeky grinning and briefly using an ice cannon, Lindbergh is the one we see the least. Morley and Betty have a bit of fun little argument about the Pinkbeard pirates's presence, but Lindbergh's mostly just there. Is he a mink? Or does he just have whiskers just because?
The fourth member, Karasu (crow in Japanese), mumbles all his dialogue (apparently, as revealed in the final panel, he has a loudspeaker?), and is this hunched-over tall dude with a cloak made entirely out of shadowy crows. Oh, and he's got a bird-mask, which is always cool. Interestingly, while Lindbergh, Betty and Morley all have the same top hat and sunglasses getup as Sabo does, Karasu's the only one without any fancy hat accessories. Karasu's a character we've seen briefly before picking up Sabo at the end of the Dressrosa arc, so that's cool.

After beating up the Pinkbeard pirates, or, well, more like helping the villagers to beat up the Pinkbeard pirates, Belo Betty tells the villagers to claim the bounty for Pinkbeard and call the Revolutionaries if they have any problems. Overall, there's not much to the chapter beyond the introductions of these new characters, but boy, it's pretty dang interesting. We'll see just how things go down in the Reverie arc, seemingly our first One Piece arc without any of the Straw Hats and focusing mostly on the kings, Revolutionary Army and... and whoever decides to show up.
