My Hero Academia 217 Review: Bakugou the Secretkeeper

My Hero Academia, Chapter 217: A New Power & All For One

It is very interesting, by the way, that the chapter opens up with Bakugou basically being let in on the whole power-sharing properties of One For All when Midoriya talks to All Might. Apparently Black Whip is not something Midoriya can currently activate at will, and I absolutely love that Bakugou tries to invoke the trope of powers manifesting in mortal danger and uses it as an excuse to basically blow the ever-loving shit up of the training room.

But best of all, I really, really do love that there's no big fuss about them bringing Bakugou into the loop. It has always been a played-out trope in both Shonen manga as well as superhero stories that a secret gets dragged on just to milk out as much angst as possible... and thank god that they're not doing it to milk out more Midoriya/Bakugou angst. I like that. Interestingly, All Might claims to not have heard any idea of this Avatar-esque ability of possessing previous wielders' quirks, noting that his own master did not tell him anything either. Bakugou, of course, gives the most logical explanation that this whole thing might be because of their recent conflicts with All For One, although I'm not sure why said power-up didn't happen with All Might. Or All Might might be hiding something, who knows.

The next segment of the chapter is just actually some cute stuff with Class 1A and 1B hanging out together. There's not much to talk about -- it's all just adorableness, but I do like that Mineta is being 'punished' by Ashido for his lecherousness, as well as Testutetsutetstutetsu and Kirishima still being best bros. I do like Todoroki confronting Midoriya about keeping a secret power hidden from him even though their whole deal is 'we need to go all out against each other' all the way back during the sports festival... and while Midoriya ends up giving a pretty valid excuse of literally not knowing what that is, I do love Bakugou's side-glance and comment that Todoroki is both sharp and dense at the same time.

I do like how Todoroki just assumes that Midoriya has two quirks like his own fire-and-ice, and that's probably what everyone else thought of it. Interestingly, this leads to Torodoki finally replying to Endeavour's messages (and I absolutely love the continuity nod in their little chat) and wanting Endeavour to teach him how to use the Flashfire technique.

Interestingly, we get a brief conversation between Present Mic and Eraserhead about how similar Aizawa is to Shinsou, as well as noting how 'are you going to do this again?' with a name-drop of someone called Shiragumo, which is... it's interesting, but it's basically just seeding more plot threads for the future.

The final parts of this chapter is... it's actually kind of a quick resolution of the cliffhanger from the previous chapter. I absolutely love that Mirio has apparently told Eri that Monoma is "The Dark Side of U.A.", which is just something I find hilarious. Hell, even Aizawa gets in on mocking Monoma, noting with a deadpan expression that Monoma meeting Eri alone would be bad for the little girl's mental health. Monoma then gives this huge speech about how it's another 'miss', and that Monoma's ability can only copy the quirk, but if the quirk accumulates things (we use Fat Gum's quirk as an example), it doesn't really end up doing anything for Monoma. Which is why One For All didn't give Monoma anything -- Monoma basically just copies the base quirk without the stockpiled strength.

Interestingly, what does this mean about Eri's quirk? What does it stockpile? Considering how worried I was that Eri was going to be reduced to a plot device that helps rewind everything similar to Elizabeth from Nanatsu no Taizai, it's... it's kind of interesting where they are going with her, I guess? That's about all I have for this chapter. Mostly just interesting setup and confirmations about some loose ends from the previous arc. I feel after the slump that was the 1A-vs-1B arc, we're finally going to go into something that's a bit more interesting.
