Arrow S07E20 Review: Plot Twist Conga

Arrow, Season 7, Episode 20: Confessions

Arrow Season 7 Episode 20 Review: ConfessionsThis is an... interesting episode. For the first, oh, thirty minutes or so, it felt like a fun little guest-star episode, and it seems like it will be one of the many standalone solid episodes in Arrow's seventh season's back end, even if it's to the disservice of the honestly meandering Ninth Circle main storyline. We take a bit of a Rashomon-style "which of these characters who we all like is lying?" format of Oliver, John, Felicity, Rene and Roy being interviewed by Dinah about who is responsible for the brutal bludgeoning and murder of a pair of guards on a mission that we, the audience, didn't get to see.

And it's... it's definitely an interesting concept for an episode, even if it's not particularly super novel or engaging. The plot twist that it's actually Roy Harper, who's driven in a post-Lazarus-Pit resurrection rage and basically going through what Sara and Thea went through in previous seasons, is... it's an interesting twist to give to the character, with the equal revelation that Roy died sometime after leaving with Thea and Nyssa, and got resurrected with a Lazarus Pit. Oh, and a subsequent revelation tells us that apparently every single member of the Arrow Team, Dinah included, are collaborating to protect Roy and basically pin the crime on Emiko, with the excuse of Team Arrow not fully cooperating with Oliver protecting his sister.

And while it's something that most of our cast (other than Dinah and Roy, although they clearly cooperated) agree to, this is also the sort of shady stuff that Oliver and his crusade has promised will never happen again now that they're more transparent and shit, plus Oliver's been punished by the show's narrative with the prison sentence. So it's interesting to see what backlash we'll get from this episode. With the fact that Emiko apparently has possession of the security tapes that will incriminate all our heroes and essentially expose them, it seems to be the direction that the final episodes of the season will take.

The episode itself is pretty solid, with a lot of neat cuts, nice action scenes (particularly involving Arsenal's acrobatic trick shots) and is an enjoyable episode to watch, although I can't help but think that we really could've had a better excuse than "by the way, Roy's a Lazarus zombie now". They also portray Dinah's partner, the fat cop dude we've seen a couple of times, as this annoying, persistent asshole, when in reality he's honestly just doing his job and his frustration at the vigilantes is sort of warranted in this situation. Overall, though, a pretty simple and enjoyable episode.
