Let's Play Pokemon Uranium: Part 21: Victory Road ft. Daft Punks

181176It's been pretty fun playing the fan-game Pokemon Uranium, despite all of its flaws, but it's going to be the end soon as we enter the final stretch. I clean up a bunch of random side-quests, training, as well as Pokemon-catching before finally tackling the Victory Road. This is a slightly longer part than the previous parts, because I kinda want to rush things on to get to the end of the game. I had actually completed the previous couple pages of the Let's Play a while back, but it took so long to commentate and sort through the many, many dialogue of the story. This one's pretty light and easy to read through, though, just exploration and fighty fight.

I realized I never completed the Labyrinth dungeon, so I did a bit of running around. There's a bunch of stuff, like the Life Orb (already own one, though), a mega stone, a Shadow Claw TM...

...and a Shadow Ball TM. Both Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball are pretty dang useful, but my party's mostly kitted out relatively well. Shadow Ball's mostly just going to allow coverage for Psychic-types and Ghost-types, and we already have The Queen's Silver Wind and LV426's Dark Pulse for Psychics. But E. coli has some redundancy with both Giga Drain and Energy Ball, so yeah, why not?

First up, I'm going to complete all the ninja sidequests and reunite them with their master, who had asked Ura to gather all of his disciples, the training ninjas, to combat some threat or whatever in the future. It's probably a ten tailed beast or something.

This ninja is on a beach island off of Burole Town, I think.

Ah, it's a practical stat, too, the trainer for the Physical Attack. I'm not going to show all of them, but they basically give me their corresponding EV-raising held item.

Is "ninja away" a reference to anything? All of the ninjas say this, but I don't know if it's actually meant to be a reference to anything.

Some of the ninjas build their dojos in like, weird, secluded parts that you have to surf to and zpi around islands or whatever, or go through sandy paths to reach the dojo.

Of particular annoyance is this one in the Baykal Forest, which took me forever to find, and I had to look up a guide.

Anyway, six ninjas are reunited.

All of the ninjas ask what's going on. Why are you gathering the tribes, and where is Tobi and what is he going to do? Is he summoning a bunch of zombies to arbitrarily extend the story by 150 chapters?

"Ms. Obasan" is such an oxymoron. It basically means "Ms. Grandma". I'm not sure if it's actually intentional "haha bad weeb lingo" on the writers' part, or if it's just, y'know, bad weeb lingo.

Apparently the old grandpa is just happy to see his children and didn't actually have a proper prophecy or whatever to bring them back. Ooookay? It's nowhere as funny as the game thinks it is, but y'know what? I'm not complaining. The quest means that the stat trainers are all in one place. Again, a bit too late since all of my Pokemon have maxed out their EV's and whatnot, but eh.

I'm already the Hokage, "Honorary Ninja" seems like a step down.

Or, well, E. coli is the Hokage. You know what I mean.

Oh, hey, free pseudo-legendary baby!

Seems about right. Volchik is adorable, and Yatagarayu is a pretty impressive Pokemon, peeking at the fan-wiki, but I'm not about to raise this thing for a couple dozen levels. I already have a far, far superior Electric type in E. coli.

He gives me a Macho Brace, but the real prize of this sidequest is the fact that all the stat trainers are in one place, and that I can challenge them for fights. Which is nice. Without Theo being my personal punchbag in Mascara Island, it's neat to have a place where I can farm experience and money.

The training minigame is still here, but I can also do things the old-fashioned way by beating up on their EV-yield Pokemon. Blight, who's been sitting out of the fights in the nuclear power plants, gets to murder gun lobsters.

The egg Professor Bamb'o gave me turns out to be an adorable little Luxi, the Dragon/Fairy lucky jade statue Pokemon. I love the design, not sure if I see the 'dragon' part. Super Luck also seems to be an interesting ability.

Luxi's adorable, and if I had gotten him earlier in the game I would definitely used one. Apparently these were given as Wi-Fi gifts or something similar to the Torchic and Beldum distributions in the official 3DS games, which is actually a neat little thing.

One more side-quest, one more side-quest! And then we go to the Victory Road, I promise!

So this cave in Route 5 is blocked with a Strength or Rock Smash boulder, and I could've accessed it a while back but I just never back-tracked here because the cave levels are kinda boring. We get a fossil rush moment, though.

Ha ha, Indiana, get it, like Harrison Ford? He's an archaeologist, though, not a paleontologist, so, uh, you get zero marks for the inappropriate homage.

Two kinds of mammal Pokemon, otherwise known as "two of the stars of the Ice Age movie". It's either a huge coincidence that we get a sloth and a mammoth, or it's a deliberate homage.

Ew, "Hair Fossil" sounds pretty damn gross. I like the sloth better than the mammoth man, though.

And now you're Gollum? Make up your mind who you're homaging, dang it.

John Hammond! Do me a solid!

"Slothohm" is such a mouthful. It's a combination of "Sloth" and "Ohm", which makes sense, but man, just gluing the two words together makes for a very awkward name.

The pokemon itself isn't super impressive, but I like how derpy it looks.

I also catch myself a Minyan, which apparently is a time-sensitive Pokemon that only shows up at night, replacing Lunapup. She's adorable, and if I had encountered her earlier I would've actually used her in my party instead of... well, instead of S-51, I guess. She's an adorable evil kitty bat.

Victory Road time, which is south of Legend Town.

This lady is cooltrainer Elsa, and she uses all ice Pokemon. Get it? Because let it go?

Yeah, diversify your team. Mono-type teams only work if the game has enough dual-types to really offset some of the weaknesses. Like, unless you're a gym leader contractually obligated to use a single type, never go full Bug or full Ice or full Fighting or whatever.

These things are in the grass of the Victory Road. Sheebit is, uh... sheep-rabbit? I guess it's a rabbit with horns, and apparently it's a Ground-type? It's a cute bun-bun, which is why she's called Bun-bun.

Interesting that Sheebit is not the only horned rabbit fakemon in the game, since we also had Jackdeary before. Guess the game makers really like the Wolpertinger?

I catch one of these, which are actually pretty common while surfing. Blubelrog, in addition to having an awkward-to-say name, really looks like a creep that's probably a registered sex offender. Look at that face. Look at that face, that gangly arms and that pose. What a nasty-looking thing.

Oh hey what? Stenowatt is a neat single-stage electric raptor, which I really wished was featured a bit more. I encounter maybe two or three through my journey through the Victory Road. Obvious name is obvious.

My premonitions are telling me that my E. coli's Shadow Ball will get put to great use!

Montage of Blight being a goddamn badass. He's a bit lower-leveled than the rest of the party thanks to the nuclear area, but he's quickly catching up by killing all of these dual-type evolved Pokemon.

Also, Terrabit there is the weird kangaroo-rabbit evolution of Sheebit. Her horns look like hair straight out of the 70's

A bunch of TM's! Sandstorm's kind of useless for my team, and Thunder Wave's way useless at this point.

Tracton, the super-expensive casino prize, is here. As a Steel/Dragon he's actually quite a mighty creature indeed, and if I had bothered to buy the casino coins back then, Tracton is definitely a pretty damn interesting powerhouse I could've had in my team.

Instead, as a destructive sentient construction vehicle, I'm calling him Devastator. Because "Breakdramon" didn't fit.

50,000 volts? That's like, five thunderbolts!

This dude uses all electric-types, obviously. I do like the trainers in this Victory Road. Elsa's lampshade aside, I do like that some of the trainers specialize in a special type or other.

WHAT THE FUCK.

IT'S GHOST DAFT PUNK. IT'S GHOST DAFT PUNK AS A POKEMON.

My god, this is so dumb it's hilarious. I should be angry at this thing, like I was at the Titanic Pokemon, but I dunno. This genuinely got a giggle out of me.

Apparently it's god legendary stats or something? I totally forgot this is a thing. Apparently it's got "Instant Crush", but it's still Electric type so Charlie is harder, better, faster and stronger.

Unlike 50K volts guy and Elsa, this dude specializes in all the types.

He, uh, only has three Pokemon -- a Dermafrost, a Duplicat and an Inflagetah, which isn't really a proper rounded-out team. I guess Duplicat technically allows him to use all the types?

More TM's! X-Scissor is useful for Taxonomaly and Chykka, but I think they both had learned the move naturally. Endeavour is kind of a useless gimmick move.

Also, waterfalls are here, but I don't have the HM yet.

While all of this is going on, I've been putting the experience share on my random Pokemon in the box to fast-speed them and get some evolutions to get prizes from Professor Bambo'o. Here we go... EVOLUTION MONTAGE!

Frynai evolves into Saidine and Daikatuna. Really don't like how Daikatuna looks, these silly mascot pokemon of the surfing ninjas.

I have spare Eevees from my hunt for Blight. These are all just using up my evolution stones, and these are all shitty Eevees with a negative special attack nature. I wasn't trying to look for the perfect nature, but I sure as hell don't want a debilitating one.

Inflagetah, one of the more broken creatures in the game thanks to its ability and movepool and stats and mega evolution. I frankly think it visually looks too awkward, and also I have charlie.

The superhero and supervillain ones. We see Herolune a lot because Theo has one. Vilucard's kinda cool.

My Little Pony and Red Dead Redemption: Underwater Edition.

Ugh this dumb thing.

I also dicked around with mega evolutions, so have this nuclear Mega Gyarados.

Also this dumb thing. Feliger is a neat variation of the Slaking gimmick, but being asleep from the get-go means that you have to RNG your way through "maybe Snore will work and I don't wake up" or put a berry on him. Fun puzzle, but not worth it.

I forgot to take a screenshot of Tajador turning from a Palij into a Pajay. But it did.

I put Starspawn for trade on the GTS forever ago, and it came back with someone else's Cometeor, who evolves into Astronite.

It's admirable that they made a fully working online scene, but honestly, it's unnecessary.

...that's it? Motherfucking U-Turn? I expected some other rare egg or something. Damn it Bamboo man.

Well, let's do some party restructuring.

LV-426 has been our UFO chariot that flies us all around Tandor and scares the shit out of the farmers, but it's time we actually make all four of his moves good. LV-426 learns Psychic.

And The Queen learns Attack Order, Vespiqueen's move. I kinda want to teach her Heal Order, because she doesn't really need the bug coverage since she already has access to like all the types already, but the visual image of The God-Queen of All Insects summoning a massive swarm of murder bugs to kill the enemy is too good to pass up.

Cerebella gets Focus Blast, because Hydro Pump and Surf are sort of overlapping, and while Focus Blast isn't going to be something I see Cerebella using often especially since she's going to be locked into spamming one of the first three moves thanks to Focus Specs... but eh, maybe it'll be useful?

Charlie learns Dragon Claw, too, for coverage. Which in retrospect isn't the best thing to do, since his physical attack is kind of not as god as his special, and I already have Ice Beam on Cerebella for dragons. Eh.

Chykka is there for flight support. She might be replaced by The Queen, but she's happy to serve. For the Hive!

A part of the Victory Road is a cave.

LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR

LET THE BODIES HIT THE

FLOOOOOOOOOOOR

(Also why the fuck do every third trainer have like a Neopunk?)

A TM I'm never going to use, and a random reference to an official Pokemon.

I get a dumb-looking mole rhino thing. I'm calling him a Bullette after the D&D monster.

More or less a screenshot of my party halfway through the Victory Road.

Okay, Smogon man, let's see how your 'competitive movesets' are.

Gliscor is a decent choice, I guess? Pity I didn't see what he's able to use because guess what, Cerebella has a Focus-Specs-boosted Ice Beam that hits it for 4x damage. Considering it's a 'competitive moveset' the Gliscor probably had Stealth Rock or some shit.

The Ampharos somehow tanked Charlie's Earth Power. He has Leftovers, which is a nice item, but surely not "competitive"?

And the Gyarados is just dead to E. coli, who is the bane of all that lives in the oceans.

I mean... I guess the 'core' of your team is maybe solid? I dunno. He's a pleasant man for a competitive trainer. Most of the ones I see online are snobbish.

This lady's just looking wistfully down the crevice and I have to actively fight her.

Her team's not too impressive...

Until this damn deer-horse-rabbit shows up! Laissure is another pseudo-legendary, and we saw a statue of it in the ninja museum. It's an intimidating rabbit!

Huh, apparently she qualified for the Championship? And... arena? Are we going to have to fight other challengers instead of an Elite Four? That'd be interesting.

Stone Edge is great, even if it has shit accuracy but none of my team can use it. I'm not sure what "Binding Band" is.

Earthquake is obviously awesome, but Charlie already learned and outgrew it. Rocky Helmet is hilarious on some Pokemon.

MURDER MONTAGE

Also, some trainers here have a Devimp, who is an imp with a fire on top of his head. Devimp grows into Fallen Angel, who is a demon dragon-man Digimon with Nidoqueen boobs. Not very impressive.

MORE MURDER!

I do like that we're seeing a lot of evolved Pokemon here. Inflagetah, Chimaconda, Syrentide... pretty neat stuff.

Hints about a legendary Pokemon, which I assume is beyond the waterfalls I cannot pass through.

This jackass's "new lineup of Pokemon" includes the other half of Daft Punk, Praseopunk.

I'm pretty sure Instant crush is one of their songs. They're not particularly strong, but are powerful enough stat-wise to be annoying.

MORE MURDER MONTAGE.

His new lineup of Pokemon is pretty impressive, he's one of the few trainers in the Victory Road to have a full team of six.

Apparently that's not the exit, there's a bridge to a second cave area! With double battles!

Also, the mountain rumbles to the left and right. Underfoot is a bridge.

These are a Tsuki and Nami ninja respectively. S'neat.

A familiar face? Old sport? Could it be?

Jolly good sir it is GENTLEMAN SIR GOLD CORN!

His team can't stand against the God-Queen of All Insects, the Hokage and the living weapon, but hey, good show old chap and all that.

Huh. The more I talk to these random trainers the more it's building up the Elite Four counterpart to be a Championship tournament or something.

Mismagius is in this game? I completely forgot.

The Shakespeare-quoting area is like, five cities to the East, lady.

Random volcano area!

Blight one-shots the foe Archilles, making Charlie quiver in his pokeball. Also, for all his talk about 'speed', the NPC's Archilles doesn't actually have the priority move Flame Impact, so he's talking out of his ass.

More legendary foreshadowing!

I'm pretty sure I've met Dovak before in one of the previous areas, because I remember his name cause it sounds like Dovahkiin. But his dialogue is just generic.

Devimps populate this area. I name mine after Glasya-Labolas.

Double battle against Daft Punk!

HYPER VOICE! Blight murders both the Daft Punk boys with a single attack. Kiss my nuclear fox's ass, you dumb legendary wannabes.

Blight then proceeds to use Hyper Voice to one-shot both these My Little Ponies. Blight is a strong boy.

A lot of strength puzzles happen here, and it's not the most intuitive becasue the effects are sometimes inconsistent. Trust me, there is a lot of strength puzzling going on, and I'm just sparing all of you from seeing it sine it's uninteresting.

The Queen gets to swap out the more powerful but more inaccurate Fire Blast with the slightly less powerful but more accurate Flamethrower. Either way it's pretty destructive, honestly, just the difference whether you shoot the guy in the head twice or three times, y'know? Either way the other guy's still dead.

This weird little scorpion will-o-wisp thing is a neat concept, and is the rare encounter here. I name mine Hitodama.

More strength puzzles. I basically have repel up throughout this entire sequence. It's kind of annoying.

Oh hey, Dragon Pulse is a special Dragon type move, Charlie would be perfect for it AW COME ON.

And finally... hoo! Out of Victory Road! That's a long, but pretty fun, Victory Road. Strength puzzles notwithstanding. Next up is the championship, and I guess I'm assuming the final part of the Curie plot!
