My Hero Academia 107 Review: Processed Meat

My Hero Academia, Chapter 107: What Kaminari Denki is Thinking

Yeah, there are your generic superpowers like flight, super-strength, super-speed, invisibility, elemental control, transforming into a beast or stuff like that... and then there are the utterly disturbing shit like Mr. Processed Meat (Shishikura Seiji, apparently called) here. He can just fold anyone's flesh and meat into... well... things right out of a Lovecraftian nightmare. Seeing it happen to poor Bakugou is just disturbing, and the mangaka isn't even really being overtly graphic. But damn if it doesn't look horrifying.

It's basically a nice mini-spotlight for Kaminari, which is nice. The manga does a pretty good job juggling the lesser 1A students that's not part of the core group (Midoriya, Uraraka, Bakugou, Iida, Todoroki) with Sero having some relative prominence on the Midoriya side of things. On Midoriya's side of things it's mostly a bit procedural, although the little combo move between Uraraka and Cero is pretty cool -- even if they spent way too much time explaining it. There's a nice moment where Midoriya goes all 'so do we' and coldly eliminates the bunch of older students.

Seiji is a typical entitled douchebag that gets around calling other people plebeians and peasants simply because they're not all posh and shit, and while he does make some good points -- with All Might out of the picture, they really need to weed out the lesser superheroes. But that doesn't really make him a nice person for intentionally seeking out as many people as he can and turn them into meat blobs because he self-appointed himself as this filter for what a proper hero should be.

The main bulk of the chapter gives some highlight on Kaminari, who takes sort-of-center-stage when Bakugou gets meatified. In a way the focus is also on Bakugou, because Kaminari notes how Bakugou isn't going around EXPLOSION EXPLOD EXPLOSION in his full strength because Kaminari and the meatified Kirishima are around and could be hurt, forcing Bakugou to use a slightly less potent version of his powers with his grenades. We also learn that Midoriya isn't the only one with new mechanical equipment upgrades, with Bakugou having grenades and Kaminari having these discs that allow him to direct his lightning blasts.

Kaminari's got this cool speech where he defends Bakugou and highlights him as someone who, more than anything else, under the foul-mouthed bluster, truly wants to be a hero. Yeah, Bakugou's your regular Guy Gardner, I suppose.

At the end of the chapter, Team Bakugou beat up Seiji and has to face off against the other demeatified victims. A bunch of students have already passed and joined Todoroki in the passing room, but while no one from U.A. has failed yet, the fact that there is a set quota for passing students doesn't mean that everyone will get their licenses. There's also a phase two that involves old people...?
