One Piece 859 Review: Earplugs

One Piece, Chapter 859: The Yonkou Assassination Plan

So it's a simple chapter, mostly discussing how they're going to attack Big Mom -- something that the rest of the Straw Hats note to be a near-impossible feat considering how they nearly got killed when she's just asleep. Capone Bege notes that all they need is 5 seconds to take down Big Mom, but the presence of literally the entire Big Mom pirate crew means that even combining forces they're all likely to be wiped out entirely.

Caesar Clown is apparently a central player in Bege's plans, and he's threatening to kill Bege's son if he doesn't let Caesar free after the assassination -- did Caesar have some kind of leverage, some poison inside Bege's son? Bege seems to actually love his kid, because around halfway in the chapter he coos over his son like a doting parent, so it's not just because Bege is a jackass parent.

In either case Caesar hates Big Mom more than he does Bege, and he's back in form as a psychotic scientist, showing off three giant missile launchers, the KX Launcher. They have three of them. Bege notes that despite Caesar's very psychotic advertisement of the KX launcher's lethality, it's not enough to murder Big Mom, and there are two conditions that must be fulfilled for their plan to work: no interference for five seconds, and that Big Mom's body must be weakened... not an easy task, as many people in this chapter compare Big Mom's body to an 'iron balloon'.

Apparently during their time as a subordinate of Big Mom's, they've observed Big Mom getting hurt exactly once. There's a photograph of 'Mother Caramel' (Big Mom's mother? Sister?) that is placed opposite of her in tea parties. Once when the photograph was accidentally tipped, she screamed so loudly, unleashing her Conqueror's Haki and knocking over everyone in the room (well she is a Yonkou) and bleeding from a wound in her knee, so Bege surmises that slicing the picture would cause Big Mom to be vulnerable and cause everyone else in the party to get knocked out by the Haki unleashing.

Bege's big plan to avoid the Haki shriek? "Invisible Symphonia System". Otherwise known as earplugs. I'm... not entirely sure how earplugs can block the Haki wave, but hey.

Bege leaves the distraction of slashing the photograph to Luffy, who happily accepts because he gets to unleash a cool entrance pose, ignoring Bege's note that the moment between the photo's destruction and Big Mom's shriek will potentially cause every other pirate under Big Mom to go and try to murder Luffy. Sanji notes that the timing should be after Pudding tries to shoot him during their wedding. Bege notes that during the window after Big Mom shoots, the Firetank Pirates will unleash their assassination, while the Straw Hats will do their rescue of the Germa. Caesar, meanwhile, is in charge of using Brulee (still tied up!) to coordinate their escape.

Poor Bege, your plan's not going to work at all. Luffy will fuck shit up, and I'm not fully convinced Caesar will cooperate in rescuing them. The meeting is adjourned, Sanji returns to the groom's room and we get a short montage of the residents of Totto-land reacting, we get a brief shot of Big Mom crying over "Brook" being dead and lifeless, and Pudding in her wedding dress being a bit of a bitch. The Red Tea Party Wedding begins next chapter, apparently, so yay for that!

  1. How did The Straw hats hear Bege when he told them to dive in the mirror after the plan failed?
