One Piece 1078 Review: And the Killer Is...

One Piece, Chapter 1078: Escape Limit

Finally, we get the revelation of the traitor. We get a bit of a check-in immediately with Stussy and Jinbe, which I think kinda serves to get rid of all the 'Stussy is a triple-agent' theories from the previous chapter's cliffhanger. They discuss with Sentomaru about the arrival of Kizaru and a mega-super-duper Buster Call, since this isn't like Ohara in the fact that... well, Ohara can actually fight back with armies of robots and fleets of cyborg sea serpents. Sentomaru tells all the random civilians to escape.

We get to see where S-Snake has frozen Usopp, Lilith and half of Franky... and Franky's just swinging around his still-unpetrified left arm. Dude, you've got your Weapons Left or whatever in that thing. Shoot the... okay, I guess Franky isn't going to shoot the little girl, but still. S-Snake steps of Pythagoras and then we cut away to her walking away from a giant explosion... and... well, I would say that Pythagoras isn't the most relevant character and this would be the story eliminating the other Vegapunks, but we all know our One Piece. I'm sorry, Kin'emon's non-death have really made me question every single 'death' that's going to happen here.

We check in a bit about the group of Robin, Chopper and Atlas, who TBH I kind of forgot about. After lampshading the Sanji rushing to save Nami scene from the previous chapter, they go off to investigate the basement. On the Nami/Brook/Sanji location, Brook decides to turn into a ghost to look for Stellapunk, which he should've done in the first place, what the hell you ghost man. S-Shark punches Sanji and he literally just folds his hands like a boss and grins.

Meanwhile, in the Luffy/Zoro/Lucci/Kaku segment... S-Hawk had ran off and gone to hunt down the weaker Straw Hats. Zoro goes off to chase S-Hawk down, and in the best bit of comedy all arc long, Luffy yells at "Usopp" to go with him... referring to Kaku, of course. Kaku even takes two panels to realize that he's just been called Usopp. Luffy uses a Hawk Gatling while Lucci yells that simply hitting him won't work. Wanna bet, Lucci?

We cut to a couple of scenes. Bonney crying, the Marines deploying (including a cameo from Akainu yelling in his office, as always) and it's a showcase of 3 months earlier, when the traitor tells Mary Geoise that Vegapunk is researching the Void Century... leading to the Cipher Pols investigating Egghead. we get to see a bunch of Marine ships deploying (I don't think we know any of these Marines other than Doll?) and even Jay Garcia Saturn arriving with Kizaru... and then, of course, the ultimate monkey wrench... the Yonko Luffy arriving on the scene. The narrator gives up some hype that this event will shake the world.

And then we finally follow up with the cliffhanger last chapter with Shaka being shot... and the one that arrives is York, with a big-ass gun. She talks about how she 'wants to be a Celestial Dragon', which fits with her 'Greed' title, I guess. She doesn't really give a shit about how the Celestial Dragons are scumbags, and she talks about how the world doesn't need that many Vegapunks. And... I mean, sure? York literally does nothing in the arc. She gets introduced, gets some lines... her, Edison and Pythagoras really didn't do jack-all throughout the arc that it wouldn't be surprising if they arranged for their seeming demise to throw the good guys and the audience off the trail. But... I don't know.

On one hand, I am happy that it's not like some random guy from outside of Egghead like, oh, the mastermind is actually, uh... Don Krieg or Doflamingo released from jail or whatever, but in the same vein... when Kanjurou was revealed to be a traitor in Wano, or when Lucci, Kalifa, Kaku and Blueno were revealed to be traitors in Water Seven... all those characters had a bit more of a presence before, you know? It makes logical sense, it isn't the worst twist that could happen, and I know some readers like it... I just really didn't find it all that interesting, is all... compared to if it was someone that had more of a character presence in Egghead like Shaka, Lilith or Stussy, or even Atlas. Oh well. I'm not particularly invested in this whodunnit storyline, and I honestly am pretty happy we can move on.

Random Notes:
  • Yeah, the seeming end of the Germa cover story (I didn't realize it's still a Germa story for the most part over the past couple of months) is Judge and Caesar setting up 'Neo MADS'... while in the background, Ichiji and Reiju just walk away all annoyed with whatever's going on with their crazy dad.
  • Hell, I'm still unconvinced Shaka's dead. What's to say that the Daft Punk helmet isn't actually a decoy body, and he's got an Edison/Pythagoras style robot body in his chest or something?
  • Other than the satellite Vegapunks and Stussy, some of the guesses I've seen online on who the traitor is, that would make sense with what is established in the story: St. Jay Garcia Saturn, Kizaru, Caribou, S-Flamingo being activated off-screen, Bonney going crazy after the emotions, Caesar and Judge arriving prior to the start of the arc because the cover story takes place during the Wano arc, the Seraphim Shichibukai gaining sentience.
    • I wouldn't be as happy if Blackbeard's crew showed up, but at least with us seeing what Blackbeard's guys have been up to recently, I wouldn't be opposed either.
    • Another cool potential traitor is Punk Records itself, the main part of Vegapunk's giant evergrowing brain, gaining sentience like Skynet or some shit.
  • That is a big-ass rifle that York is holding, though. How is Shaka's head not entirely obliterated?
