My Hero Academia 199 Review: A New Way To Fly

Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 199: Impromptu New Move Operation

A bit of a fun chapter for sure. We start off with an unexpected brief flashback to Tokoyami getting a workplace experience under Hawks, who's the most happy-go-lucky dude that apparently picked Tokoyami "because we're both birds". He also offhandedly notes that he wants to talk to someone from Class 1A, so it's probably a veiled reason about investigating the whole League of Villains thing.

Interestingly, however, during the internship, Tokyoami's intense drive ended up causing Hawks to give Tokoyami some really great advice -- it's good to compensate for his shortcomings and all, but sometimes he has to improve his strong points as well, in order to properly "fly" like a bird.

Flash-forward to the actual fight, and apparently Kuroiro has been building up this seeming rivalry against Tokoyami as a feint, because his real target is Aoyama. Tokoyami, however, gives chase by... flying! With his new move, Dark Fallen Angel, which has a pretty epic introduction panel...  and then a hilariously cartoonish explanation about how Dark Shadow is always floating, so this time around it's just floating while wrapping Tokoyami in his arms. Bit of a hilarious and equally epic power-up, for sure.

And as it looked like Aoyama's navel lasers (he can apparently shoot it in all directions now?) is cutting out shadows for Kuroiro to move around in, suddenly a mushroom grows in Momo's face, because apparently the whole Kuroiro operation is also a feint? Next up, mushroom girl, then. Overall, it's ultimately just a bit of an action chapter with a pretty neat little power upgrade for Tokoyami, but the brief addition of the flashback of Tokoyami's relationship with his mentor is definitely a welcome addition.
