One Piece, Chapter 974-978 Review:
More One Piece! This time covering the present-day chapters.
Chapter 674: Onward to Onigashima!
We start off this chapter with a flashbacks to a few months ago, with Orochi freaking out that Toki's powers are actually real and Kin'emon's group have been transported into the present day from the past, and Orochi ends up talking about "him", the traitor that has been inserted into the Scabbards. And it's... it's a bit of an odd way to insert the character into the story and reminding us about the fact that a traitor exists, because, well, thanks to the whole 'boil alongside my lord' sequence, it really ended up feeling like a bit of an odd way to shove in a motivation... but eh, all things considered it could be worse? I admit I'm not a biggest fan of Orochi revealing that the traitor is actually a Kurozumi, a fanatical method actor, and also one that was so willing to look for a place to die that he's crazy enough to die as part of his role... but at this point I'm just happy we've ripped off that band-aid and actually can move on with it? It's relatively satisfying as a revelation, even if it doesn't really blow me away. It's Kanjurou, of course, and... and I feel like he's the only member of the Scabbards that really didn't quite have a huge scene like Raizou and the minks, or Kawamatsu and the magic fox, y'know? I can't really say that I care that much about Kanjurou as a character, he's been with us for a pretty long time, since Dressrossa... and that's about it.
After that bit of Orochi scene and a very short recap/montage of Kin'emon's group's travels, we return to the Scabbards facing a storm on Port Tokage with no backup and no army, and the Scabbards are just willing to just head straight into Onigashima in desperation, because maybe they can cut Kaido's head or something. And in the boat, as they're all stuck in desperation, Kin'emon ends up basically telling the other Scabbards about how he's suspected that there might be a traitor among them... and Kanjurou ends up 'making things clear' and revealing that he is the traitor, and that is a very cool panel with the shadowing of Kanjurou's face.
Kanjurou talks about how he basically is very much devoted to his role, how he doesn't care that they almost died together because he wanted to complete his role into perfection, and how he doesn't really wish them any sort of malice. And it's... it's a bit odd that he would choose now to tell them when previously he didn't mind dying alongside them without revealing his identity, but eh. Kanjurou gloats as three massive Kaidou-allied warships show up to mock the silly samurai, and I absolutely love the subsequent scene where Kin'emon immediately just fucking beheads Kanjurou with his sword... but turns out that it's an ink clone, because turns out Kanjurou can actually draw things very well with his Devil Fruit and he's been faking being an idiot artist all this time. Which is actually a very cool and clever bit of detail -- it could've very easily been just another wacky power in One Piece, but turns out Kanjurou just is faking being a moron.
Thanks to Orochi's orders, however, Kanjurou's plan now is to kidnap Momonosuke and bring him back to Orochi, and he's stayed behind at the port while the other Scabbards are seemingly doomed... and then the pirates show up! The entire Straw Hat crew are assembled together; Law showing up with his submarine; Kid showing up having sunk a bunch of Kaidou's ships on the way... of course, no one really believed that the Straw Hats or the Thousand Sunny are out of the game, and their return is just a matter of time, so it's not like this is a huge surprise, but it is still a pretty badass entry, particularly with the line of "at sea, you fight pirates!" as the three worst dudes from Sabaody finally team up again.
Chapter 675: Kin'emon's Clever Trick
Kanjurou is absolutely flabbergasted that Luffy, Law and Kid have shown up and he doesn't know anything about any of their intel, and I absolutely love Franky mocking them for thinking that they can sink Adam-Wood ship with mere bombs. And after so long, it's just nice to see all members of the Straw Hat crew hanging out together, y'know? The Beast Pirates basically do a bit of gloating that they don't have any boats and also that Big Mom and Kaidou are entering and alliance, and talk shit about how three tiny pirate ships of losers who have already been defeated won't be able to change anything. And then we get a bit of a combo attack between Kid, Luffy and Law, and they absolutely demolish one of these loser ships, all the while just arguing and stuff. It's neat, but I kinda wished that this was done to someone that actually mattered, like a sub-commander or something instead of just a random ship.
And then Kyoshiro shows up with his ship, seemingly showing up to help the pirates, before Kyoshiro one-shots and slices one of the Kaidou pirate boats. Kyoshiro then talks to the Red Scabbard Samurai, telling them a story that only they would know -- the little detail of the Mountain God Incident, and the small little detail from the flashback that it's actually Kin'emon's stupidity that caused it. Kyoshiro reveals his true identity to everyone there, that he's actually Denjiro, and throws off his pompadour which is apparently something you can remove. Okay! Denjiro also shows up with a huge amount of men, namely the samurai liberated from Raisetsu Prison, as well as his own small army of gangsters.
In perhaps my favourite moment in these chapters, Denjiro then talks about the huge plan to fool the traitor, and how Denjiro has been biding his time because he totally 'understood' Kin'emon's master plan of duplicity. Thanks to some word-play, what Yasuie's actual message was to turn Port Habu (Habu Minato) into Hato (pigeon) by removing the center words... and that is where everyone actually gathered, with the sunken ships being just spares. Meanwhile, Kin'emon, in all his foolishness, misunderstood it as Tokage (lizard) with the legs on the snake, and that's the information that most of the Scabbards received. Denjiro plays this up as Kin'emon being actually this master chessmaster that's been fooling everyone close to him, and how Orochi being out of touch with the country meant that he misjudged distances and blew up bridges one day too late, and the entire assembled army of Wano stands ready. All the while, Denjiro plays this up as this huge master plan Kin'emon concocted, and Kanjurou is doing the whole "curses!" thing and the chapter stops in this perfect moment of zooming into Kin'emon's stern, serious face while he goes "oh, so I misinterpreted the message". That's actually a very funny moment right there.

Chapter 676: Begging Your Pardon
And while Kanjurou is all surprised and shit, Raizou, Kawamatsu, Ashura Doji and Inuarashi clearly isn't buying that this is Kin'emon's big smart chessmaster moment, and they all catch on quickly that Kin'emon is just a dumbass. But then Kin'emon gives this rousing speech about accepting their fate, using up all their luck, and being vassals of Lord Oden and whatnot. We also get a pretty cool thing from Kawamatsu as he jumps straight into the water and dives straight towards Kanjurou on the port, leading to a clash of weapons. But then Kanjurou flies into the air with a drawn stork, out of Kawamatsu's reach, and threatens to also hunt down Hiyori.
I do like that Luffy doesn't actually get what's going on about all of the treacherous things that Kanjurou is doing, and Momonosuke starts off this scene as his usual crybaby child self. Sanji and Robin, being the smarter members of the Straw Hats, catch onto Kanjurou being a spy very quickly and there was a bit where Sanji was about to do some sky-walk thing and Usopp is about to snipe Kanjurou, but Kanjurou makes this massive ink cloud and rains down a bunch of needles upon our heroes. Poor Sanji ends up protecting Nami instead of doing a badass flying rescue thing, which... admittedly, is pretty on-brand for Sanji.
I do like the moment given to Momonosuke here, and Kanjurou basically mocks Momonosuke, telling him about how he's kind of a sorry excuse of a leader especially after how badass Oden and Toki died. And then Momonosuke cries out to everyone, telling them to not worry about him because that's what the enemy wants, promising to get out of this on his own and ordering them to take down Kaidou and Orochi. And I do like the little thought bubbles where Momonosuke realizes that it's impossible for him, but he doesn't want them to waste time and manpower trying to get Momo. While Luffy is actually impressed that Momonosuke's actually speaking like a proper man for once. Really, I haven't appreciated it as much as I probably should've, but Luffy and Momo's mentor-esque relationship is something that is actually really well done across the various arcs they've shared screentime in. As Kanjurou flies off with Momonosuke, Luffy promises to try and save Momo at some point.
And... I think a lot of people had a problem with this part of the chapter because it isn't make too clear why any of the superhumans present there like Law or Sanji or Luffy or Robin couldn't do something to get Momonosuke back, but it did lead to a huge character moment? I dunno. I guess it definitely could've been presented in a better way?
The final parts of this chapter is the final Kaidou pirate ship, who reveals that they have long-range cannons which they sort of build up (very weakly) as being this huge threat, but, again, cannons haven't really been a huge threat in the world of One Piece, not to our main characters at least. Still, it does give us a pretty cool sequence to re-introduce another main character... Jinbe! Who finally returns after a year of absence with a Wave Spear to absolutely demolish the Beast Pirate ship, before doing a yakuza pose and introducing himself as the 'new recruit' to the Straw Hat pirates in an awesome, long-winded way, and I absolutely love that Kid and Law are flabbergasted that an ex-Shichibukai is part of the Straw Hats. That sure is unexpected, but okay!
Chapter 677: The Party's Off
The chapter starts off with basically the Straw Hats welcoming Jinbe into the Straw Hat crew properly, and I do like that the little name-box actually does list Jinbe as part of the Straw Hat crew. It's been a long, long while since like, New Fishman Island or some shit that they've been sort of cock-teasing us with Jinbe maybe joining the crew or not or something like that, so it's definitely great that we're finally gotten that done and over with.
The chapter has the Straw Hats sort of be their usual chaotic happy stuff while the smart people in the alliance try to strategize with Law. Law talks with the Scabbards, Grandpa Hyou and Shishillian the Mink warrior, and... and I do like the bit of the outline of their plan, basically having multiple distractions to enter Onigashima. There's another fun moment with Kin'emon detailing his plan... before Denjiro goes "okay, so that's the fake plan, what's the real plan?" and Raizou immediately catches on to the fact that, no, Kin'emon doesn't have any sort of plan beyond that. It's Law that ends up coming up with the plan, and I absolutely love that he's basically learned from Dressrosa and earlier in the Wano arc by noting that there are 'some idiots' that won't listen to any sort of plan, so just let Luffy and Kid's crews wreak havoc as a distraction and bait, while they go by submarine to attack Kaidou. And I do like Kin'emon sheepishly playing it off as 'finalizing' his plan or something, and Raizou doesn't buy it for a second. Obviously this plan will be screwed and not go well once the actual named characters like Kaidou, King, Queen, Jack and the rest actually get involved, but it's nice to have a plan, y'know?
And in a fun bit, turns out that the Straw Hat idiots are already doing their attacking thing, and every single member of the Straw Hats (including Jinbe!) are doing action scenes... and I absolutely like the fact that while everyone is doing something badass and one-shotting random Kaidou mooks, the coward trio of Chopper, Nami and Usopp are just hiding and watching things intently. Which is hilarious. Whatever happened to the "I'm no longer one of you coward trio" swole Usopp? Silly Usopp.
I do also like Denjiro briefly panicking about not warning them about the guardians of the gate, and how this all basically stems from Zoro smelling some alcohol and they really, really want to get the alcohol to give Jinbe a toast. Observation Haki ain't got nothing against Zoro's alcohol sense. We get a pretty cool large panel of the Straw Hats basically perched around the fallen guardians, and that's all very nice. As much as I've been finally enjoying the Wano characters, it's nice to see the Straw Hat crew other than Luffy do things again. There's a brief scene of Kid's crew basically laughing all the time, and the Straw Hats basically trying to compete with Kid's crew.
This chapter then ends with a shot of Onigashima where Orochi and Kaidou are having a crazy drunken party, and apparently Kaidou is... waiting for his son? That's kind of a random bit and everyone is speculating on who Kaidou's son is, with some of the more common speculations I've seen ranging from Jack (who's conspicuously absent in this chapter and the next), one of the Tobiroppo, one of Big Mom's children or a new character. Either way. Also, apparently Big Mom is not present, going off to change into a kimono? Okay, sure.

And I do like the little thought bubbles where Momonosuke realizes that it's impossible for him, but he doesn't want them to waste time and manpower trying to get Momo. Chapter 678: Introducing the Tobiroppo
This chapter starts off with the samurai, pirates, minks and their assorted allies finally reaching Onigashima via a combination of the underwater and hidden route, and there's an interesting bit where Kin'emon lampshades how they don't seem to have received Kanjurou's report about the change in plans. Is Kanjurou doing something totally different? He's kinda crazy, after all, and he might want to 'fully' complete whatever plan he is planning or whatever. Onigashima also looks really cool, and there's a big-ass sword plunged into the ground for some reason.
We get a couple of neat scenes like Usopp sniping and putting a bunch of lookouts to sleep, the samurai slashing their own ships and letting them sink as a show of resolve, and Kin'emon using his devil fruit powers to turn everyone to resemble members of the Beast Pirates. We get to see some of the Straw Hats turn into this brand-new outfit, too, and apparently it's like, standard dress code among the Beast Pirates that the women dress in bikinis?
The second half of this chapter just shows the Onigashima party, with Scratchmen Apoo being a DJ and Queen hamming things up as this super-flamboyant master of ceremonies or whatever and it's sort of a roll call of the many, many divisions among the Beast Pirates... which I honestly don't care about? It's nice to have this world-building details but none of them other than the named characters are really going to be relevant.
What seems to be relevant, though, are the Tobiroppo, or the Flying Six, and we finally get to see all six of them. We've met X-Drake and Page One before, and now we see the other four, and at least some of them, like Ulti and Drake, seems to be talking about how they don't really like Queen and might be planning to depose him? It's interesting to see some dissension in the ranks, I guess, and to see some characters that are probably going to be far more relevant in the fights to come. Anyway, I've been really enjoying the Wano arc so far, which is a far cry from my opinion when we first reached this island!

Random Notes:
- The cover story has Gotti save what he thinks is Chiffon, but it's actually Lola, and the two sisters finally meet each other! It's basically what the conclusion of this is going to be, and in a greater sense it's going to allow Lola to get caught up on the events of Whole Cake Island, and they might then be far more relevant to the main story.
- 674 stars off with a bit of a neat sequence of Denjiro and Hiyori making plans for if they have to 'separate' Hiyori and Komurasaki by death, which, of course, is the explanation for Komurasaki's survival a while back. Blood bags, that's how you do it.
- At some point I really would like to go back to Dressrossa and Zou and re-read all of the Kanjurou scenes and see if there has been any sort of subtle hints that he's the traitor... but on the other hand, Kanjurou's like, super-devoted into playing the role of a Kozuki vassal so he probably just ends up looking super loyal.
- Carrot is very suspiciously shown in a lot of group shots that otherwise only show Straw Hat crew members, most noticeably in the scene where they're all hugging Jinbe. There's a running theory that Carrot might be the next crew member to join, particularly with how much screentime she's been having in like, new video games and filler arcs and stuff? I wouldn't be opposed to that, honestly.
- It sort of gets brushed off in 975, but Luffy basically reverts back from Gear Fourth without any sort of side-effects. That's basically expected, honestly. Powers with side-effects in One Piece rarely stick around for too long.
- Some of the random Gifters are pretty fun, there's a pretty cool butterfly lady, and an absolutely goofy-looking dude that looks like he's wearing a bird-head-hoodie.
- Denjiro is a very smart guy, and one that's able to do the long-term con plan of Kyoshiro and Komurasaki, so I'm sure he actually saw all the way through Kin'emon's stupidity and is just hyping him up for the benefit of the alliance.
- Raizou asking Denjiro what happened to his face is hilarious. This isn't Tokyo Ghoul, you don't suddenly lose hair colouration due to strong emotions!
