Teen Titans S03E10 Review: Mother of Maggots

Teen Titans, Season 3, Episode 10: Can I Keep Him?

It's a fun filler episode, which I honestly probably rate a bit unfairly highly simply because I love the Killer Moth. It's a Starfire-centric episode, though, which sadly doesn't have the best track record of being particularly well-written. But this is easily one of the stronger ones, where the plot has Beast Boy tell Starfire to hide Silkie -- one of Killer Moth's ugly-yet-adorable mutant caterpillars who Beast Boy kept after the events of 'Date with Destiny'. Starfire immediately fell in love with Silkie who she treats like a child more than a pet, and ends up feeding some alien berries that causes Silkie to mutate into dinosaur-size proportions.

There are some utterly hilarious moments throughout the episode, with Silkie eating Cyborg's leg, Starfire generally fawning over Silkie, Killer Moth and Starfire's attempts to win Silkie over -- going from the heartwarming Starfire-Silkie bonding moments to the flashbacks to Killer Moth... experimenting... on actual caterpillars as Killer Moth tries his best Darth Vader impression is utterly hilarious.

The episode made relatively little sense, with Silkie randomly surviving after having its giant moth form explode into mucus making jack shit sense... but unlike, say, Revolution, the nonsense is bordered by a plot and a story that was actually told instead of just a single wacky situation that the characters don't do much with.

Johnny Rancid also shows up with a giant Grimlock Godzilla robot, but honestly Johnny Rancid is just such a boring villain that I forgot what he did in this episode and I watched it yesterday, and if not for the giant robot dinosaur I'd have forgotten him completely.

Overall, though, it's not the best episode out there, but the presence of Killer Moth and the utterly wacky plot of adopting Silkie (who, by the way, I found adorable) is fun as all hell.
