Boku no Hero Academia 131 Review: Combo Moves and Resolutions

My Hero Academia, Chapter 131: Opposing Fate

The chapter's majority is just Midoriya dealing with All Might's prophecy. It's just a talk in the park, and it's not the most exciting thing ever. Hell, it's not even something fresh -- wanting to bend fate is like, number three in "things a Shonen manga protagonist will say." But the writing, and the moment that builds up to this, as well as the bond between Midoriya and All Might, actually made me feel something. Midoriya's monologue, All Might reflecting on his first meeting, with Midoriya and how he had been ready to die that day, but Midoriya's heroics inspired him... it should've been a 'guh, flashbacks again' moment in a lesser manga, but this is far better written, and the flashbacks are actually woven in pretty well to sell All Might's point. We've got the "we need to live together, don't give up!" moment from Midoriya. All of this combined should've been a recipe for me to lambast this manga. Yet I can't! It's actually well-written! Midoriya's dialogue actually makes sense, not just parroting Generic Shonen Speech #3! The fact that this is the first time this happens between these two characters, not every other chapter coughFairyTailcough means that it actually has an impact when All Might and Midoriya decide to, well, bend fate.

And we even get some new material, like Nighteye freaking out over All Might picking a quirkless young boy out of a gut choice, some discussion about whether Nighteye's predictions can be changed (apparently the further the prediction, the greater the chance of error), and the fact that All Might's slated to die this year or the next.

It's cheesy as all hell, and ran for like three or four pages longer than it has a right to, but it leaves an impact, so I can't begrudge it too much.

Meanwhile, two villains with Gigantification quirks, a shark and a hairy man, are rampaging in town. Suddenly a superhero shows up, and it's Hadou, the long-haired hyperactive girl that's buddies with Togata, and she just blasts the two of them down with a gigantic spiral wave, acting pretty bubbly and absent minded. And who else shows up? Uraraka and Tsuyu, who use a combination move to defeat those two. Not quite sure what Tsuyu's role is -- flicking the rocks with her tongue, I guess? But they won, and they're apparently interning with the very cool-looking lady in a dress, with bat-wing-ears and claw-fringes, the Dragon Hero, Ryukyu. After complimenting them Ryukyu tells them about how there's a team up request... with Nighteye's group! Also, "Red Riot" Kirishima is apparently teaming up with the goth kid that's buddies with Hadou and Togata. Who's named himself Suneater. How adorable!

They're going to investigate the Eightfold Cleansers, who are teaming up with the Villain Alliance. OR at least having a meeting about it right now. Yes, meeting at last! So yeah, a bit of a slower chapter overall, but a very well-written one.
