My Hero Academia 130 Review: Cryptic Revelations

My Hero Academia, Chapter 130: Demand the Whole Truth

Nighteye and Bubble are informed about how Mirio and Midoriya made contact with Chisaki, but Nighteye isn't angry about that, noting that if he had used his foresight on them, he would've been able to see what's going to happen and prevented this. So he can use foresight on multiple people, then? Nighteye also reveals what happened to a bunch of bank robbers a while back during Overhaul's debut, and apparently despite what we, the audience, saw (gruesome merging with parts of their car), the robbers passed out from some excruciating pain, without wounds, and later were captured with all their sicknesses like rheumatism or cavities all healed... and thanks to the lack of casualties and any actual crime, Overhaul's crew aren't arrested for crimes. The money was all burnt up, though, so it's unclear if Overhaul just doesn't care about money, or if they did something to make it look like they burned the money.

So it's very interesting. Can Overhaul's quirk also heal people instead of just blowing them up and/or merging them with items? Is that the quirk of one of his men? Is Overhaul like Firestorm from DC comics, and his powers is actually molecular reconstruction? Very curious. Regardless, though, he would probably make a fortune selling free health care. Can he cure, like, cancer? Or missing limbs, or AIDS, or any of the big untreatable diseases?

Midoriya and Mirio bring Eri up and Midoriya is all 'we must help her'. And the same argument as the previous episode plays out. Nighteye tells Midoriya not to be so arrogant, because rushing in half-cocked will cause Overhaul to slip away, and he flat-out tells Midoriya that he's not special and won't be able to save someone merely by wishing it. On the other hand, though, while I fully agree as to not being reckless, Nighteye's plan to, well, make this huge, long plan to figure out what Overhaul's big plan is doesn't really seem super-conducive either, and if anything else it'll allow Overhaul to commit crimes in the meantime. It's a very nice bit of moral ambiguity. You're a hero, so you do have to save people, and what's the point of being a hero if you can't save the person in front of you? But on the other hand, it's not like rushing in half-cocked will accomplish much and might be seen as naive (if stupidly brave).

We get back to the class, and there are some generic class scenes. Bakugou being a glorious dick, some students (Uraraka, Tsuyu, Kirishima) being absent, presumably on internship as well, Mineta being so well-informed about hot superhero chicks that he knows about Midoriya working alongside miss midriff-and-underboob Bubble, but Midoriya gets so bothered that he begins sinking in his lessons. Literally sinking in a pool. Aizawa even threatens to cut out the internship program short if he flunks in his classes.

Midoriya catches up to All Might jogging, and flat-out gets pissed off and demands All Might to tell him the whole story -- he doesn't know anything about anything, he doesn't know All Might's intentions, he's pissed that All Might's hiding a secret, and it's not just as a fan or a student that he needs to know this, because he's All Might's successor. A bit presumptuous and arguably OOC considering how respectful Midoriya tends to be, but you understand where he's coming from.

The story that All Might gives us is the highlight of the chapter, that's for sure, about how he used to have a strict no-sidekick rule until he partners up with Nighteye for five years. Also, he acts more as a supporter in terms of being the 'brains of the operation', but they split up due to the big injury All Might suffered six years ago, the battle that fucked up his internal organs. Nighteye and the principal basically tells All Might to retire, and a variation of the argument Midoriya had with Nighteye happens.

All Might damns his injuries and wants to go out and continue being a symbol. Nighteye, meanwhile wants All Might to retire at a high note, and search for a successor instead. All Might, however, notes that during the transition period while he's looking for a successor, villains will be able to run amuck. Of course, there's the argument that we're now smack dab in a transition period without All Might and while A.F.O. is imprisoned, we have Overhaul and Shigaraki building up their forces and running amuck anyway.

And I think part of Nighteye's desperation to get All Might to retire is that he couldn't bear to see his mentor and idol continue basically working himself to death. He wants to help All Might, who doesn't care about himself and cares about helping the world. Also another reason? Nighteye apparently has prophetic vision powers or something -- about how All Might will be killed by a villain in the future -- and he's desperate to note that he might be wrong this time, and how he will change the future. It's very interesting to see the very composed, cool and collected Nighteye getting more and more desperate in that flashback.

And that prophecy that All Might will be killed is the reason that he doesn't want to tell it to Midoriya, another fan of his.
