Nanatsu no Taizai 211 Review: Two of Them

Nanatsu no Taizai, Chapter 211: A Farewell Message

Well, that was a plot twist, that's for sure! King and Diane discover that Gowther's actually a former member of the Ten Commandments, which is apparently something they don't know (and they confuse this imaginary memory-world Gowther too). They battle a bit with this past incarnation of Gowther and there's a bit of a moment where Diane is angry for having her memories erased by Gowther. Oh. Right. That was a plot point. But as King notes, the Gowther that erased Diane's memories is the Gowther in the present day (did they seriously not force Gowther to fix it during the time skip?) or, well, assuming this isn't actually time travel and really just them reliving Dolor and Gloxinia's memories. Because if it is just the memory-illusion thing, then King and Diane being idiots and giving speeches like that to Gowther is, well, idiotic.

However, Merascylla is tricked by Gowther. She didn't create the gate to the demon world, but rather to a specific part of the demon world: the demon world's prison. A person in a wheelchair comes out of the portal, and shuts up the raging Merascylla with a hand and an energy bubble to the face, apologizing very politely for manipulating her in his escape.

He claims to have not been in the outside world for 5000 years, and introduces himself to Merascylla as Gowther. The 'real' Gowther, in any case, and the puppet-glasses Gowther we know is mimicking what he's saying. Both Gowthers talk about how all the emotions are a work of art, how it's a proof of life. He also tells Merascylla that he does't care about the holy war, whatever the demon king may command of him. Gowther says that after being made into the Commandment of Selflessness, he had his freedom stolen for 5000 years, keeping contact in the outside world with the puppet Gowther we know and love. But apparently now is the time for Gowther to say bye-bye to the world...

What does it all mean? It's definitely a big, big revelation surrounding Gowther, a character that's absolutely mysterious, and here's what I think... the innocent Gowther that's in the present day might just be the puppet, cut loose from the demon originally controlling him? Maybe? But then we did get a brief scene of Gowther introducing himself to a bunch of guards in a (relatively) recent chapter as the Commandment Gowther. So it's definitely interesting where we're going. Why is Gowther imprisoned, is the 'actual' Gowther still alive, what does he mean with his time running out... all that jazz. Definitely very, very curious.
