One Piece, Chapter 868: KX Launcher
Welp, the plan went south pretty quickly. Let's just acknowledge that the Cavendish backstory seemed to have finished with Cavendish telling Suleiman about the origin story of the several ships of fangirls chasing them down and move on.
Surprisingly, we get a brief flashback to how there were witnesses to Big Mom's apparent act of cannibalism (which they still skirt around actually confirming as cannibalism). A giant witness basically reported it back to Elbaf which causes Elbaf to hate Big Mom even more, and the other who saw it? Big Mom's chef, Streusen, who had the Cook Cook Fruit -- allowing him to turn any inanimate object into food. For whatever reason, Streusen took pity on Big Mom, and asks her about her dreams (Streusen not wanting to sit next to Big Mom and keeping some distance really is probably yet another confirmation that Big Mom dead go all lunch on those poor kids) and Big Mom, as a kid, heard how Mother Caramel wanted to make a country where everyone is equal and can see eye-to-eye... something Big Mom took literally about turning everyone into giants to see eye to eye with her.
We also get a brief montage about Linlin discovering her Soul Fruit powers, and her increasingly powerful reign and rise as a pirate, how she wants to create a 'country of dreams' and killing all the selfish people who don't want to submit.
In the present day, everyone's still frozen in place and Capone's pirates unleash the poison gas at Big Mom... but her anger at the Straw Hat Pirates for breaking the picture of Carmel causes her to unleash a second wave of Haki that... shatters the KX missiles. Capone's expression at that scene is just priceless. And he just books it. Katakuri makes earplugs with his powers and drops them near the other Big Mom Pirates, while Caesar's escape route via mirror ends up failing because Big Mom's haki blast shatters it too. (Again, everyone's reactions to the mirror shattering is hilarious)
And, well, even without Big Mom recovering fully, Katakuri, Smoothie and the other children have and they're heading towards them. Capone uses his Castle Castle Fruit powers to... well, apparently turn into a giant castle? Or create a giant castle man? Or something? It's not something I expected. Is it one of them Awakened Devil Fruit powers? Whatever the case, having a chimney taking the place of Capone's cigar is hilarious and I love it.
So yeah, the Straw Hat alliance is pretty fucked up right now, which is pretty much what I expected. We'll see whether they manage to escape at all.
