Nanatsu no Taizai 142 Review: Yandere Zombies

Nanatsu no Taizai, Chapter 142: Where the Love Lies

Okay this week was fucking busy. And I didn’t get a chance to review Taizai (or Berserk, for that matter) until today… and today is when all the Shonen Jump chapters come out. So, uh, I’ll do a quick review on Taizai before doing the Jump chapters, I guess.

Anyway, this chapter basically reintroduces Elaine, brought back to life as… uh, a yandere zombie monster. She just goes up to the black-dress fairy bitch Gerharde, and the other fairies, and are like “you all talked a lot with Ban.” Before summoning this Imperial Wrath of Great Wind or whatever attack and basically throwing the fairies around, taking special care to whack Gerharde several times simply because she tried to hurt Ban. Crazy yandere. Not that Gerharde doesn’t deserve it, that weird one-eared asshole.

So apparently Elaine has wind powers! I honestly didn’t remember if she did before. She summons a dress out of black petals to form a feminine version of Ban’s clothes. She summons Oslo to her, and we cut away to King – who I totally forget was also connected with Elaine when I read last week’s chapter. The ghost of Hellbram explains to King what’s going on with the zombies and shit, and the souls with great regret are coming back to life – Hellbram compares it to Hendricksen reviving him, but on a completely different scale. So what’s the great regret Elaine had? Simply not being around Ban?

King then has a bit of a long, annoying scene where he just tells Meliodas to fuck off because he doesn’t know anything about Meliodas – despite it, y’know, being one of the main rules of their group. Hell, if it’s “not knowing anything” Hawk would be the most suspicious of them all. Elizabeth even makes a good point of telling King that even she doesn’t know her own backstory, but King just acts like a gigantic twat – even worse than when Ban did it during the big war in the city – because he doesn’t even have a trigger or a reason to suspect that Meliodas has evil intentions. And as a former outcast from his tribe I think King really doesn’t have that much of an excuse to be a prick.

Ban and Jericho are burying Zhivago, but Jericho gets attacked by a woman-hating zombie. Ban demonstrates how much more awesome than zombies he is since he has Wolverine-level regeneration, and notes that the zombies are actually stronger than normal humans before ‘sploding the woman-hater zombie’s head.

And then Elaine’s hands appear from behind Jericho and the next panel has blood splurting out. I honestly thought Jericho was done – either killed off or at least grievously injured, but Ban apparently used his thieving powers to knock Jericho away and took the brunt of the attack…and despite Elaine pretty clearly being psychotic Ban just moves in for the big kiss.

And it’s interesting just how much sanity Elaine has. Is Darth Elaine the real Elaine, just corrupted… or simply her corpse reanimated by the lingering evil feelings of jealousy and possessiveness and whatnot? And how will Ban react? And does this actually bring Elaine back to life, or is it dependent on Lil’ Miss Shadow Hands? Well I guess we’ll be finding out quite soon.
