Boku no Hero Academia 67 Review: Mineta Rocks

Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 67: Scratching the Veneer

We cut back and forth between some of the teams, which is fine, because the end focuses on Mineta and that is awesome. First we’ve got Kirishima and this big-lips dude Satou Rikidou who we have never seen before and I honestly remember him less than Jirou. Satou has the quirk “Sugar Dope”, which means he gets stronger when he eats sugar, but his brain function drops. So kinda like Kaminari, but way less awesome. They’re fighting against Cementoss, who’s just putting up walls of cement and notes how both of them are weak in battles of attrition.

Iida and Ojiro (tail dude)’s battle have apparently ended, and it seemed like Iida sacrificed himself in battling the teacher with a construction-vehicle-dragon mask to let Ojiro exit alone. And the battlefield is filled with holes and construction vehicles. I didn’t expect we would skip Iida’s fight since he’s one of the main characters, but oh well. Shouji and Hagakure have also passed the test off-screen against Snipe, and apparently it’s a hide-and-seek game between them. We also see Uraraka and that weird fuck Aoyama, battling No. 13 and they’re just struggling against the suction powers of a black hole. Aoyama’s costume can transfer his belly button laser to his knees… except black holes swallow light. Whoops. And Aoyama’s weird wing-mask also gets swallowed and destroyed. “What’s with you, Aoyama?” Uraraka asks. “I am me.” Aoyama answers, which is the best comeback anyone can probably come up to that question.

Aoyama then quite accurately asks Uraraka if she’s thinking what Midoriya would do, and the age-old question ‘do you love him?’, causing Uraraka to let go of her hold, which causes No. 13 to reflexively close his finger-hatch (because it’ll completely shred Uraraka to death) and later on we see that Uraraka managed to enter psycho-Uraraka mode and capture No. 13 with the gauntlets. Damn girl you scary

The main bulk of this chapter focuses on Mineta fighting against Midnight, and he’s apparently actually shouting the English word ‘fuck’ in the original Japanese version. Good job, Mineta, you grow more and more likable every chapter. We get a re-explanation of Midnight’s powers, which is that her body exudes an aroma that puts people to sleep – working better on men than women. With her crazy BDSM costume. Mineta is literally crying blood and absolutely furious that Sero had saved him and thrown him away, but is now sleeping in Midnight’s lap.

Heal Girl notes how Yuuei is super-tough to pass and anyone with a simple casual mindset towards being a hero won’t survive, and notes how people who survive Yuuei usually have a goal they’re really passionate towards. Mineta’s? “I wanna feel up a woman’s body. I wanna be cool.” Very honest, as Heal Girl notes.

Mineta gets a one-panel flashback about how he wanted to be a hero because he wanted to be cool – the flashback, of course, showing a cool handsome guy getting presents from women. Meanwhile, Midnight arrives with an absolutely psychotic rape face as she uses a whip to attack Mineta, talking about how she’s enough of a sadist to continue chasing Mineta as he is crying. Mineta continues to run, but notes to himself that “it’s not that heroes are cool because they are heroes… heroes are heroes because they are cool.” It’s kind of wise, and I do like how he flashes back to Eraserhead, All Might and Midoriya, heroes he’s seen fighting in the USJ, and then he gives this speech about how he’s a gigantic fan of a lewd hero like Midnight (all while holding his breath) and his crying and running is an attempt to trigger Midnight’s sadism... all to be a cool guy.

Mineta tapes up his mouth and nose with a piece of Sero’s tape we see him holding earlier in the chapter, and while he can’t possibly fight in a state of asphyxiation, he throws around his grape balls, noting that it’s his special move ‘Grape Rush’… and it sticks Midnight’s whip to the ground, and Midnight’s right hand to her whip, rendering her immobile. This impresses Heal Girl, Midoriya and myself, the reader, and he manages to pass, dragging the unconscious Sero out with him.

Good fucking job, Mineta.

He’s the last to pass, however, and the Ashido/Kaminari and Kirishima/Sugar Dope teams fail to pass in their respective test. Poor them.

We see Shigaraki Tomura in his bar while the narration is all ominous and shit. Shigaraki is studying Midoriya’s picture, and then some dude with glasses and a cigarette shows up, talking about how the Villain Alliance has been the talk of the town for days, and a bunch of people show up, wanting to join the Villain Alliance. We see this dude who is all… stitches? Burn marks? He’s all fucked up from the lower jaw downwards, and he has the gall to call Shigaraki creepy as hell. The other one is the little psychotic schoolgirl we saw before during the montage of villains inspired by Stain.

Well, good. I wanted to see more of this. More of the villainy stuff. Bring on the next arc!
