Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 71: Kouta
As the title says, a good part of the chapter focuses more on this mysterious Kouta kid, who is the nephew of the black Pussy Cat hero. She's called Mandalei and I'm sure I won't remember her name next week. The other Pussy Cat explains to Midoriya later on in the chapter how Kouta's parents were heroes that were killed in the line of duty, and thanks to the world basically celebrating their heroic sacrifice, the young Kouta ended up being absolutely disgusted and unimpressed with superheroes in general. It's a nice twist and it's kinda sorta similar to that one kid from the first Zabuza arc in Naruto, except he lives in a world with superheroes like everywhere.
THAT DOES NOT GIVE YOU FREE REIN TO PUNCH SOMEONE IN THE DICK, THOUGH
Midoriya didn't even do or say anything to him! What a little shit!
Yes, childhood trauma and all that, but anyone who dickpunches someone with no reason is an asshole in my books. I physically cringed from that scene even as I laughed quite a bit. He also pushes Mineta off the top of that bath separator when he tried to peep, which is slightly more justifiable, even if it'll kill the little pervert if Midoriya didn't do that super leap up there.
The training ended up overwhelming them, and despite the big show made by the monster four last chapter they end up arriving really, really late, and the Pussy Cats just talk about how they're nowhere at the level of pros. A nice little nod to how, despite their successes against stuff like Stain, the teachers and the USJ incidents, they're still absolute rookies and haven't gained the power or experience to be the best.
We get some comedy moments here and there because this is a far lighter arc than the previous ones -- Todoroki making snide deadpan jokes at Bakogou's expense is fun. And naturally, Mineta going apeshit crazy climbing up that wall with his sticky grapes to peep at the wimmen is hilarious. We get the obligatory 'see the women naked in a hot spring with convenient things blocking all the important bits' scene which knocks Kouta out by giving him a nosebleed. It's... it's definitely fanservice of young girls and it always bothers me when a manga does it. Once or twice is okay, I guess, irritating as the fanservice subjects' ages are, though so long as they don't go full on Fairy Tail it's okay.
I do like how Aizawa apparently warned the Pussy Cats about "an incarnation of human lust" which is the most appropriate description for Mineta. The manga also lampshades how the girls are "quite well-developed"... well, at least they're acknowledging it though it's true that kids are setting into puberty earlier and earlier.
The final scene has Aizawa test Bakugou's explosion-assisted ball-lobbing to demonstrate that he has barely improved compared to when they were first enrolled at Yuuei. Aizawa talks about how their growth has mostly been only about emotional and technical growth, whereas their quirks stayed mostly the same. And it's true -- even in Midoriya's case all he learned was how to better control and utilize his quirk. Aizawa talks about how they'll all upgrade their quirks as the focus of this particular training session, and, well, I'm interested in seeing how they'll go doing that.
