Teen Titans, Season 2, Episode 2: Every Dog Has Its Day
Shit, what a weird episode! Generally when Teen Titans go for a filler episode (and honestly all other superhero cartoons have filler episodes) they go for full-out zany with Mad Mod or Mumbo. But this? This is just horrible. Nevermind the sheer oddity of the alien dog and the big rock manchild Soto having this weird BDSM moment where Soto ends up becoming the 'dog' to the intelligent alien dog, as in, literally bowing down on all fours and licking his master and being put on a leash. Nevermind the uncomfortable moment where Soto literally tortures Beast Boy with electrical shocks unless he agrees to perform to his captor's entertainment -- if Soto didn't have the brain of a toddler and entertained by Beast Boy's transformations it would be all sorts of creepy. And the fact that the dog that keeps jumping and licking Raven being actually very sentient adds yet another bit of wrongness to the whole situation of using Raven as bait to get the alien dog to come and lick her. The attempts at injecting characterization by having Beast Boy feel alone and unappreciated, and ending up meeting an overly-attached alien who puts him on a leash and forces him to perform? That didn't work out at all.
That said, though, the final action sequence between Soto and the Titans is a really great one. Shame that the same couldn't be said about the episode. If I didn't have to review it, I would skip this episode entirely.
