Teen Titans, Season 2, Episode 7: Transformation
Well, Spider-Man is a metaphor for a boy learning about how his body is changing as he goes through puberty. We get one for Starfire this episode as apparently some Tamaraneans go through a phase that involves them developing horns, hairy feet, zebra nails and all sorts of weird body horror before turning into a chrysalis, and then emerging, exactly the same as they were before but with the power to shoot eye beams. Also apparently it's a rare occurrence, because Blackfire's puberty only had her turn purple for a day.
There's a bit of a Twilight Zone-style narration throughout the episode in the montages as we're "introduced" to Starfire, and the little montage as she flies to different planets looking for a place to belong, and this snarky narration helps to give the episode a kind of stylistic coherence. It's basically just a big puberty metaphor, with Starfire flying away from Earth and the Titans modifying the submarine to go to spaaaace and save Starfire from an Acklay a random alien who eats Tamaraneans in chrysalis form.
We get a welcome return for Plasmus as we get some cool action sequences between him and the Titans, and we get some hilarious visual moments as Starfire tries to muck around wrapped up in thick clothes. And, yeah, technically Starfire has shot eyebeams out of her eyes before, like literally the previous episode. That's a goof-up. Maybe this episode was meant to be aired before the previous one?
It's an average puberty episode, ending with the first death of this series -- the Chrysalis Eater alien gets eaten by the giant deku baba Starfire fought earlier -- and it's entertaining enough to watch.
DC Easter Eggs Corner:
- From this episode onwards, keep an eye out for Silkie, one of the moth grubs that the Titans decided to keep from the previous episode. The show doesn't acknowledge her existence until her own episode, but Silkie shows up in the background of nearly every single episode ever.
