Nanatsu no Taizai 212 Review: Two Gowthers

Nanatsu no Taizai, Chapter 212: The Gift

So we return to the Diane-King flashback-dream-sequence thing, where they talk to both Real!Gowther and Doll!Gowther. We have a bit of a talk where Real Gowther basically reiterates some of the things that are implied in the last two chapters for us to know. The demon Gowther is imprisoned, so he makes the doll Gowther to interact with the world outside as his eyes, ears and hands, but at the same time he's also treating the doll Gowther like a child of sorts, and now that the Real Gowther is nearing the end of his life, he's thinking of giving the doll Gowther autonomy.

King is all angry and brusque against the real Gowther, damning him for hiding what's happening in the tower, but Gowther just shrugs and tells King what's going on. The humans are rebelling, and killing members of Stigma, and in order to achieve their vaguely-defined goals, they aligned themselves with the demons. I'm not sure if all humans are in on it or if it's just Law's group, but eh. Gowther notes how his goal isn't freedom, but ending the war. King goes off to save his 'sister' (projecting a little, aren't we) but Diane stays behind to talk to Gowther.

Real Gowther notes how the two of them have a bond that's very close, and notes that the proof of their love is that they have not been affected by Gowther's Commandment. So, uh... Gowther's commandment is triggered when two allies don't really love or care each other or something? Real Gowther then talks about his plans to end the war with his death, and things blur a little as he's considering about how these are travelers from the future and whatnot. Did Dolor and Gloxinia actually send Diane and King to the past, or is it really still a very, very intricate memory?

Also, incidentally, does that mean that if this is a memory, then Dolor and Gloxinia are lovers if they were not affected by Gowther's Commandment 3000 years ago?

Real Gowther tells Doll Gowther that he's going to go away, leaving behind the gift of an artificial heart and poor Gowther is just crying, and as Real Gowther notes, Doll Gowther's emotions are still like a child despite his adult intellect. Diane and Doll Gowther gets a handshake where she tells him that she'll guide him down the right path in the future. I'm not sure what the gift that Real Gowther gave Diane was, but I'm really hoping that it's her memory. Diane's memory loss honestly didn't amount to much and is just a convoluted way of resetting her as a young innocent girl again, but it's honestly kind of annoying.

Meanwhile, King is flying all the way to where Gerharde is. He's definitely projecting his issues about Elaine, about how he failed to protect Elaine... and King notes something that I noted -- why the fuck is he so worried if Gerharde is alive in the present day? Time is immutable, and all that. But I'm not sure. Is this a dream? Did they travel back in time and did King accidentally cause Gerharde's death and/or mutilation via his slothfulness again? And King shows up, shocked, to see Law holding a bloodied Gerharde. At least one leg and half her wings have been torn apart. Jeez, Law, you're a jackass, aren't you?

So, I'm honestly a lot more interested in the Gowther side of the story, and I'm definitely happy we're cutting away from the Elizabeth/Meliodas stuff. I'm not sure how I feel about the Law/Gerharde subplot, though. It really felt unnecessary.
