Movie Mini-Review: Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man and the Wasp

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ant_man_and_the_wasp_8.jpgA quick review, because I kept meaning to do a bigger one, and I never really found the time to do so. I've been meaning to start a MCU movie marathon leading up to Avengers 4, with one or two movies every month, so even if I can't get a review of this movie in a timely fashion, we'll definitely get this one in a proper long review some time down the line.

Anyway, Ant-Man and the Wasp... it's neat, it's easily one of the funnest Marvel movies out there, but at the same time it's also sort of problematic when you walk out of the movie theater. Lots of under-utilized characters, very choppy editing that had  characters show up here or there without much attention paid to detail (and this is from someone who doesn't care about these sort of things) and an over-reliance on the whole "microverse Janet powers can do anything",  which I thought was a particularly eye-rolling bit of deus ex machina. Also, for a movie starring the Wasp, poor Hope van Dyne doesn't actually get much of a proper character arc, does she?

All that said, though, Ant-Man and the Wasp does set out to accomplish what it wanted to do -- a sequel to the Ant-Man movie that does everything Ant-Man wants to do, giving the Wasp a far bigger role and lots of badass action scenes, allowing the older generation of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne (played by Catwoman!) to do stuff, and exploring more of the Microverse stuff. Throw in an especially fun little plot twist with Goliath, and a very, very sympathetic villain in Ghost... the entire movie's fun to watch, as problematic as the movie tended to be in juggling plot devices and its characters moving around.

Still, it does do its job pretty well, setting up new characters, concluding the movie in a refreshingly non-fatal way, and even having a neat tie-in with Infinity War at the end! Overall, though, this doesn't rank particularly high on my favourite Marvel movies list, but it is a fun little entry nonetheless.
