Fairy Tail 443 Review: Obligatory Fanservice Scenes, Natsu's Arm, Brandish's Loyalty & Cliches

Fairy Tail, Chapter 443: And Then, The Land Was No More

I cannot decide whether the first half of the chapter is funny or stupid. It's most likely both. It would have more impact, I'm sure, if it's not done in the beginning of a chapter coming after a cliffhanger about a super-awesome villain and starts off like an eyeball-rolling Fairy Tail(tm) gratuitous hot spring fanservice section. Is there any reason why they couldn't have done this the last time we saw Team B, where we didn't get a lot of stuff from the few pages they took up?

Anyway, in-between nipple-less breasts and wanton shots of Ichiya's ass (because Fairy Tail caters for all sorts of sexual tastes from pedophilia to... Ichiyaphilia?) and shoving Ichiya's penis into Elfman's face and Ichiya's butthole into Gajeel's face and Gajeel's face into Levy's naked boobs and jokes about Levy's tiny boobs... I must admit the Levy bit actually got me to chuckle, but for the most part it has been a bit of eyeball-rolling. The only notable thing we got from this scene is that Laxus and the Raijinshuu have joined Blue Pegasus and apparently Gajeel has been keeping it purposefully from everyone else.

Honestly Fairy Tail's fanservice have grown so dull especially when it takes up space in between actual plot like this.

But we get back to Team A. Apparently Gray and the others can feel the amount of magic oozing out of Brandish, more than Makarov apparently, which has never really been a thing in Fairy Tail so either we got another retcon, or Brandish just has that much magic. Brandish is a bit of a ditz, though, wanting the mango gelato and just being kind of ditzy and throwing a passive-aggressive tantrum.

Also, Natsu's bandaged arm shivers when he sees Brandish, so we might have something going on with it. Perhaps it's demonized and is the reason for his super awesome power?

Marin tries to be sensible and whatnot, but Brandish, for whatever reason, decides to go all out of her way to spare the Fairy Tail members and even makes Marin return Erza and Lucy from his BDSM dimension or whatever. Marin, quite sensibly, calls Brandish out on this tactical oddity and Brandish unleashes her power which ripples through the ground. The Exceeds and Wendy fly into the air but they don't seem to be gaining any altitude... and then they realize Brandish is making the island rise up as fast as they're flying. It's a pretty awesome way to show off what's essentially just your average earth-controlling powers.

Brandish is just being a 'I do what I want I don't care' even when Marin keeps badgering her that they need to bring results. So they prepare to leave, and that would be a great, if relatively anticlimatic, end to the introduction to Brandish. But Natsu shows up with the most generic-ever 'YOU HURT MY FRIEND I AM GOING TO BEAT YOU UP' and then Brandish blows up Marin and everyone acts so shocked even though the art makes it look more like Brandish just teleports Marin elsewhere. Brandish talks about how now they're down one man and they're even now and Natsu gets even more pissed off because the same shit happens in every single Fairy Tail arc.

But before I rant about cliches, Brandish seems to be really going out of her way to help out Fairy Tail. She tells them that Makarov is alive, says she hates troublesome things but doesn't eliminate the Fairy Tail members, actually shuts up her subordinate that keeps badgering her to take down Fairy Tail, and forces him to return Erza and Lucy. She seems to be on the side of the angels and sorta helping them out. Dunno, just the vibe I got from her.

She then basically makes all the island disappear other than the ground below her, dropping everyone into the sea, then talks about how they shouldn't challenge Alvarez Kingdom, how she knows they are Fairy Tail and warns them to fuck off. We get to see silhouettes of the Spriggan Twelve, though we don't get to see much.

Now let's talk about the cliches, shall we? Did we really need the 'oh no the bad guys are so evil because they are evil and then they kill/hurt/attack one of their own team members and Natsu will avenge them and take everyone down with FRIENDSHIP' in every single arc? Bad enough we have friendship speeches, but repeating this ad nauseam in every single arc since Eisenwald has been absolutely irritating. It's lost its impact when done in Fairy Tail, honestly, when every single evil guild or whatever does the same damn thing just to get Natsu to become angry and they're not even trying to make interesting variations of the scenario.

So yeah, parts of the chapter are good -- Brandish was fun if ditzy, some nice interesting information drops like Natsu's bandaged arm and Team Laxus joining Blue Pegasus for whatever reason, and Gajeel and Levy were funny. Everything else? Not so much.
