One Piece 849 Review: Brook and Chopper Taking Names

One Piece, Chapter 849: Bropper in Mirror Land

I'm not a big fan of the weird 'that Carrot is actually a frog that is an illusion due to Brulee's power'... and it fools Brulee how? I would think that someone who changes a frog into looking like a bunny girl would, y'know, remember that she did that. It's a bit of a weird explanation as to why the entire Brulee party is confused, and there felt like a missing panel of explanation as to how Chopper and Carrot managed to fool the bad guys into thinking that a frog is Carrot, and it kind of made the otherwise-awesome takedown felt a bit off.

Carrot spills the cauldron of hot water on Brulee, then basically pulls off a Pikachu and electro-shocks Randolph and like a dozen other random mooks. Chopper goes into Brain Point and then Monster Point and it's so refreshing to see Monster Point Chopper again. Chopper one-shots the giant crocodile man and manhandles the rest of Brulee's party, and Carrot also takes out the train-man Diesel, who I don't think we've seen before. Chopper notes that this means they have control of the mirror world, which is interesting... you'd think a power given to Brulee via a devil fruit would be tied to her.

Brook, meanwhile, is one-shotting every single person that comes his way and holy shit, he does look awesome. This chapter gives Brook so many awesome looking panels, from that panel with just his eyes with a glint, to him somersaulting and freeze-slicing a dude in half, stabbing a dude in the chest so hard he gets knocked backwards, all the while making jokes about 'I will avoid a loss of face... WHO SAYS I HAVE A FACE TO LOSE?' God damn, I love Brook, and seeing Brook being such a badass is awesome.

And, unexpectedly, it isn't Smoothie that comes in to confront Brook, but BIG MOM HERSELF. Holy shit, Big Mom straight-up barges into the trophy room to confront Brook while he's trying to copy the poneglyph, and man, we're going to get that soul-vs-soul fight sooner than later. Ho-lee shit. I mean, I highly doubt that Brook can truly win against Big Mom, but who knows? Maybe One Piece can change up the formula and Brook can outlast Big Mom with his soul powers.

We cut away to Pedro, who's confronted by Baron Tamago, and the two apparently have scars over their left eyes (Tamago has always wore glasses up to this point) that they dealt against each other. Tamago notes how Pedro has had so many years taken off his life by Big Mom that he's not got long to live, which explains his relatively suicidal nature. We don't get to see this fight start, but Tamago has shown himself to be pretty impressively awesome these past few chapters, and likewise for Pedro.

We get a short scene in the beginning of Judge and Sanji's brothers being dicks and talking about how they don't care if Sanji dies, but they're going to take Pudding as hostage to gain control over Big Mom's pirates. Sanji himself is made aware of the situation that Luffy and Nami are in by some random soldier, but he's more focused on cooking for Pudding. We don't really know what Sanji's planning in the end, though. The final scene shows Reiju, who's... bleeding? Who attacked her? Was it Pudding? Was it a double-cross from the rest of the Big Mom pirates? Very interesting and out of the left field.

Definitely want that Brook-vs-Big-Mom fight, though. I would be perfectly happy if the manga just stopped to have those two fight each other.
