Teen Titans S02E06 Review: Robin Goes to Prom

Teen Titans, Season 2, Episode 6: Date with Destiny

So, in this episode, the nefarious villain Killer Moth threatens to invade and destroy the city with a swarm of metal-eating moths unless Robin agrees to go on prom with his bratty, spoiled teenage daughter.

Need I say more?

"Date with Destiny" is one of the weirdest freaking episodes of Teen Titans, and I absolutely love it. It's just pure insanity. We had Robin trapped, having to go to prom with 'Kitten' (who I assume has the full name Kitten Moth?), who is this normal, bratty bitch of a teenage girl -- with some appropriately annoying lines -- while Starfire goes on with it out of jealousy. Somewhere in all this, the other three Titans try their best to go superheroing and fight Killer Moth in his moth-lair with his monster moths. Oh, and Kitten's ex-boyfriend who dumped him is a dude who literally has a giant spider for a head.

This episode is absolutely fun. It should be annoying from the premise, but it's just fun! From the big moth invasion on the bridge, to the absolutely stunning chase scene with Fang the spider-headed boy, it's a great moment for the animators. We don't really get any big character development moment beyond the mutual acknowledgement of attraction between Robin and Starfire, but, man!
Killer Moth has a bratty daughter, and is forced to force a superhero to go on a date with said daughter! Does it make sense that Starfire and her building-lifting alien strength to have trouble while grappling with Kitten? No, not really. Jeez, that should be bad, but it's not! It's fun!

Also, Killer Moth for Father of the Year award? It takes a special kind of parental dedication to swallow your dignity and change your plans for world domination and instead use it for a bid to get your daughter a decent prom date.

DC Easter Eggs Corner
  • Killer Moth, a.k.a. Drury Walker, is a Batman villain, and has been a running joke in how useless he is. Unlike the fanged gray moth-man that he is in this episode, Killer Moth is a dude with a green moth helm, striped pajama pants and silly wings, and is generally accepted to be the most loser of all Batman villains. He gets defeated by an inexperienced Batgirl in her first outing, and even when he gets mutated into a giant moth-monster, Charaxes (which this version of Killer Moth borrows his appearance from), he's still a loser. His initial Golden Age appearance initially had a gimmick where he's a reverse-Batman, where villains can use the Moth-signal to summon the Killer Moth, where he'll show up in the Mothmobile to beat up policemen or something, but that didn't exactly stick. As far as I know, Killer Moth doesn't have a daughter in the comics.
