Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 170: Together With Eri-chan

Actually a great chapter! Most of this chapter is devoted to Midoriya and Mirio meeting up with Eri, and while there isn't much to really discuss here, it's all a slow-paced meeting with lots of fluff 'd'awwww' moment between the three characters. It's a meeting that's allowed to really run its course, and one that is well-written. Most importantly, I think, is the fact that Eri's horn and powers are receding, and that she's still under the mental and emotional strain of Chisaki's abuse and now I'm glad that he's been brutalized and left powerless. I mean, Eri kind of blends in between the tropes of "helpless damsel" and "plot device" back in the yakuza arc, but now, giving her time to actually slow down and cry and pour her heart out to the two heroes...

Yeah, poor girl's been through a lot, and even now her first instinct is to blame herself for everything that's happened, something that Mirio quickly tosses aside. Everyone else is thinking "it's great that Eri-chan is safe!" and not blaming her. Of course, Midoriya decides to ask Aizawa to bring Eri along to the cultural festival, to cheer her up and stuff. It's neat, it's emotional, and actually makes me care more about the cultural festival beyond yuk-yuk-yuk-hijinks.

And then we cut off for a couple of pages with our apparent new villains, who are like those YouTube view-hounds, with the flashy caped mustachioed man-with-a-cane Gentle and his tiny little lady sponsor, La Brava. Gentle robs a convenience store and just quite literally waits for heroes to show up, and then one-shots a bunch instantly while... apparently... bending the convenience store somehow? He leaves the scene and acts all insane, pouring tea while flying away and discussing view counts... and... they're okay, I guess? Not the most threatening of villains, and honestly they look like a bunch of dudes that would feel more familiar in the One Piece setting... but I really think that's the point. They're supposed to be flamboyant and silly, presumably to contrast against the drab seriousness that the yakuza and any member of the Villain Alliance not named Twice. Overall, a solid chapter.
