Overlord, Season 1, Episode 2: Floor Guardians
A bit of a simpler episode, actually -- it's just the character establishment episode, with Momonga/Ainz (he basically alternates freely between the two names) taking stock of his Guardians and the audience beinng sort of made familiar with the couple of Guardians that gets the spotlight. Momonga tries his best to keep an image of a competent leader and manages to get along with his experimentation by handwaving it as the doings of a mysterious leader. The fact that half of the Guardians are fanboys of him doesn't hurt either. Interestingly, Momonga also notes that his sensibilities seem to have been transformed to suit his undead race, meaning that he doesn't quite feel huge rushes of emotions as he would've otherwise have.
Momonga's troops also tell him that the Tomb of Nazarick has actually moved to an unknown location full of grasslands, meaning that it's not just "Momonga is stuck within his avatar in the game Yggdrasil", but the entire guild hall ends up being transported into another world. Momonga tells the elf twins to hide the guild hall with earth, disguising it as a mountain, while he tries to check out the limits of his powers. In true video game lingo fashion, as a sorcerer, Momonga can't make use of swords without first using a magical armour. Also, thanks to the NPC's being created by video gamers, we actually get to see a hilarious bit between Demiurge and Mare about "cross-dressing", an aspect thrown in by the real-world player that created Mare and Aura. And they even speculate that maybe letting men wear women's clothing will increase spellcasting. Oh, you NPC's.
Oh, and because this is an anime, of course we have a harem subplot, with Shelltear and Albedo basically fighting over who gets to become Momonga's wife. Or main wife in their harem, once someone brings up the idea. Also, Shelltear apparently stuffs her bra, something that both Albedo and the female kid-elf makes fun of her for? Eh. Somewhere down the line, Demiurge convinces the other Guardians that it's best for Momonga to leave behind a heir. It's all weird fun stuff, and the anime staff really had a lot of fun expressions lined up for Albedo and Shelltear. Definitely love it when characters are allowed to be expressive.
We also get to see just how the Guardians view the actual players, with them referring to Momonga and the other 41 guild members as "Supreme Beings", and that they give Momonga extra respect for being the only Supreme Being who had deigned to stay behind with them in this brave new world. Interestingly, though, are how the Guardians perceive Momonga. His innate human sense of compassion and respect to the NPC's and being kind to them sort of clashes with the whole, y'know, undead lich overlord image that he's supposed to exude, although for the moment everyone at least seems to let it slide.
Oh, and in the back end of the episode, Demiurge (who can turn into a frog-bat-demon man, and has a bunch of lesser monster-demons under his command) gets a pretty huge amount of screentime in this episode, following Momonga as he flies around to survey the world, and basically proclaim that, if nothing else, he's going to make good on his whole "Overlord" title. Momonga also has a bit of soul-searching going on, although it's essentially just in his mind.
The final shot of the episode is a group of people riding horses, showing that, hey, as powerful a magician as Ainz/Momonga is, he's not alone in this world. What's an RPG setting without some enemies, after all?
