My Hero Academia 89 Review: Big Good vs Big Bad

My Hero Academia, Chapter 89: All for One's Sake

The first few pages of this chapter just shows that the black goop power thing that All for One used to re-kidnap Bakugou shows up on every single member of the villain alliance and they are bloop'd out of the location. We get a bit of All Might and Endeavor fighting the Noumus there (with All Might showing off a pretty awesome Oklahoma Smash, which involves a lot of spinning). Endeavor basically tells All Might to fuck off if he's going to go -- he's a professional, but that doesn't mean he's not still a jackass.
Meanwhile, we see the rest of the heroes in the Noumu factory all knocked out. Mount Lady, Tiger and the orca-dude were apparently thrown away from the worst of All for One's big-ass blast (and it is a big-ass blast) by pulling their clothes. Best Jeanist, despite his stupid name and his stupid face-choker jean thing, is ballsy enough to try to mount off a final offensive even when he just took the brunt of a hit that blew up like half a block. He tries to send some denim strings or whatever, but All for One does this force punch thing on his stomach and he falls back down. Dead? Maybe. As the 4th top hero, it would be an impactful enough death on the story, and he's not an important character so killing him off won't cause too much of an outrage... but on the other hand he's not an important character so other than shock value it won't matter too much in the story. Especially with All Might possibly going to suffer a mentor death soon.

All for One (clad in an awesome Sith skull helmet thing) mentions that Best Jeanist's quirk is not suitable for Shigaraki, right before the teleported Bakugou and villains show up. We get a short moment with Iida and Yaoyorozu stopping Midoriya from even thinking of facing off against All for One, which is a nice moment. All for One is actually acting somewhat mentor-y towards Shigaraki, being nice about his failure and telling him how he can try as many times as he wants to, serving as an actual reset/save slot button.

And then All Might shows up and we get a punch versus a punch as One for All faces off against All for One. I don't think any of them really are the type to spare the other if given the chance, so, um, yeah, unless something really drastic happens there's going to be a big death, and since this is a work of fiction... hint: it's not going to be the big main villain built up over 89 chapters.

Great chapter, definitely. All the slower action scenes and Midoriya emotional moments were a bit of just going through the motions, but I honestly am not really that bothered for it. Now show what All for One can do! His powers have been insanely vague -- blob teleportation, force finger push, giant explosion thing -- and it would be great to see him fight off against All Might with an insane array of powers.
