Nanatsu no Taizai 224 Review: Reincarnation Backstory

Nanatsu no Taizai, Chapter 224: That is the Way of Life

Well, surprisingly -- especially considering the last two flashbacks -- this big bomb only lasted for a chapter. And it's actually far more impactful this way, one of the biggest problems that the Great War flashback had is because a good chunk of it is already predetermined so despite the cool battle scenes they didn't really need to last more than a chapter or two. This chapter is just Meliodas telling the Sins about the full story, as well as the Sins basically putting themselves back together and be focused onto the task ahead. Basically they might have a way out by using the loophole of Zeldoris's magic power, but it's a long shot.

The backstory is basically what we all surmised from the previous two chapters. The Demon King and the Supreme Deity, both of whom show up in the flashback in an amazing two-page spread, caused Meliodas and Elizabeth to have a dual curse due to the sins of basically being i love with a member of the opposite faction.

Why the Supreme Deity and Demon King didn't fight each other right there no one can say. Maybe they's no reason beyond them just being dicks.

Also seeing the Demon King again, whatever happened to Meliodas's last meeting with the Demon King? Or his brief death? or his brief bloodlust when he fought Derriere and Monspiet? That bit not being resolved is something I really want to know about.

Ahem. Anyway, this continues with Meliodas being resurrected to life because he's been cursed with eternal life, but Elizabeth continually reincarnates, and the first time around Meliodas tells Elizabeth everything the moment Elizabeth's goddess powers manifested, causing her to die within three days. Elizabeth, thankfully, remembers enough of the curse to tell Meliodas so he doesn't try to tell her again and again, but basically part of the curse is that Elizabeth will always retain her love towards Meliodas upon reincarnation. It's short and sweet, and that's how backstories should be told in my opinion. It's certainly a well done flashback, though maybe it'll have slightly more impact if last chapter didn't spoil the whole "she'll die within three days of regaining her memory" bit but eh, semantics.
