My Hero Academia 184 Review: Top Ten Heroes

My Hero Academia, Chapter 184: JP Hero Billboard Chart

Didn't really do a chapter review for last week's chapter because it's just more of the school festival. Which is nice and I don't have a problem with, unlike some people in the internet... I just really don't  have much to talk about. It ends with Gentle given the chance by the government to work for them, which is neat! I do like the possibility of Gentle Criminal showing up later on in the future as an ally of sorts.

But this chapter opens up with the neat little revelation that apparently UA has basically adopted Eri. It's a neat little detail and it's genuinely surprising that we're having Eri show up for so long after the Overhaul arc has ended. Whether this means her honestly plot-breaking powers will continue to be a factor, or if the writer just really likes this symbol of 'a victim rescued and rehabilitated by the heroes' is interesting. We get the return of the Pussycat Dolls, in their civilian outfit, as the talk about their standing in the JP Ranking system, which is neat. Kouta also shows up and has apparently gotten a pair of matching shoes with Midoriya, so he idolizes Midoriya now? That's cute.

Ragdoll, now quirkless, is reinstated as a supporting hero like sort of an office lady of sorts, and we get a bit of a flashback to All For One in the Tartarus prison where All For One talks about how he has a little bad habit of taking up any good quirk and hoarding it for himself... before ominously noting that he will have to 'return' those quirks after using them. It really makes me somewhat curious. Just how does All For One's power-stealing ability work? Is there like a cooldown, or some conditions like Hunter x Hunter's Lulcifer? Interesting.

Regardless, we get the current rating of the top ten heroes, featuring some old and new faces. Everyone makes a big deal out of it being the first ranking without All Might in it.  It's a bit of an interesting lineup since it's sort of the My Hero Academia's equivalent of One Piece pirate bounties? Or something? Eh. Number 10 is a familiar face, Dragon Hero Ryukyu. Number 9 is this armoured, bearded samurai dude called Armoured Hero Yoroimusha, who apparently used to be in the top three in the past? Number 8 is the Washing Hero Wash, who is... a washing machine with googly-eyes and um what? Wash might possibly my new favourite ridiculous character in this manga.

Number 7 is Kamui Woods, and I reaally do like the fact that Kamui has been sort of in the background of every crisis, helping out ever since the very first chapter, and to see him sort of develop in his career in the background is definitely fun. Also, apparently there is an alleged love affair with Mt. Lady (#23, apparently), which is fun. Number 6 is a new face, the Shield Hero Crust... who isn't that memorable, honestly. He's crying over All Might's departure, basically.

Number 5 is the Rabbit Hero Miruko, a dark-skinned woman with bunny ears who immediately goes "teams are for weaklings!" Yeah, that's going to be a good chunk of her characterization, huh. Number 4 is a familiar face, Edge Shot the ninja, one of the minor characters in this manga that's near and dear to my heart due to how ridiculously 90's spikes-everywhere his design is. Number 3 is Best Jeanist, despite his absence from the actual  proceedings after his fight with All For One. The Pussycats did note that you can retain your rank of sorts even while you're recovering, and it's definitely neat to see that Best Jeanist, as silly as his name is, is still alive. Always wondered about that.

Number 2 is a new face, as far as I can remember, Hawks, who is like this Hawkman or Angel like 'cool bishonen man' hero with black wings, goggles and a cool-ass jacket. He's also apparently Tokoyami's mentor, mentioned during the chill-down part of the chapter. So is this hinting at a Hawks/Tokoyami centric arc in the future? Number 1, to no surprise, is of course Endeavor, who has a new costume that seems to incorporate parts of All Might's old costume. It's a neat little rundown of heroes, and it's definitely a neat bit of world-building. I do like the Gentle Criminal/school festival arc, but it's definitely about time that we go into something with higher stakes.
