My Hero Academia 186 Review: Hawkman and the Human Torch

My Hero Academia, Chapter 186: Endeavour and Hawks

A bit of a simpler chapter, and I initially didn't plan to do a review for this chapter... but I've been doing so few manga chapter reviews recently and I didn't do a review for 185 so I thought, eh, why not. Basically, after the whole popularity contest and Hawks basically sort of passive-aggressively calling out Endeavour, we get the two of them walking down the streets to go to a restaurant and it's pretty obvious just how different the two heroes are perceived. Hawks is basically a superstar that everyone loves, saving people with his feathers even in midst of a conversation, while Endeavour scares everyone off and even his attempt to try to be friendly to a fan ends up causing that fan to be pissed off because "Endeavour isn't supposed to give fanservice!"

It's actually interesting how we've ended up following Endeavour as our POV character for the past few chapters. Again, while it doesn't excuse Endeavour for his disgusting breeding project and family abuse, it definitely is very interesting to see this character try and be the symbol of justice that All Might was, and it's something that despite all his big talk of "just watch me" proves to be pretty hard. Also, he has to deal with Hawks, who is hilariously smug and irritating without outright being a douche. Hawks is still a hero, though, so he actually brings Endeavour up for what's basically a team-up to track down mysterious rumours of a super-powerful Noumu...

Who attacks the sushi restaurant and battles Endeavour at the end of this chapter, so this is Endeavour's first battle as the world's #1 hero. It's a simple setup chapter, and one that helps to develop Endeavour's conflict as trying to be on the spotlight as a symbol instead of just being "the scary fire dude".
