One Piece 906 Review: Old Characters Return

One Piece, Chapter 906: The Holy Land Marie Geoise

Apparently, according to Oda's actual words in this chapter, the English transliteration is "Marie Geoise" instead of Mariejois. Okay then! I will try to keep myself consistent, but as with some of these translations (which will happen with Elbaf/Elbaph), forgive me if I go back and forth between Mariejois and Marie Geois.

The chapter opens with Shirahoshi and the other dignitaries arriving at Mary Geoise. None of the Revolutionary/World Government battle is happening this chapter, which is a bit of a shame, but eh. There's a travelator installed in Marie Geoise's grounds, although the Fishmen elect to take the long, scenic route. Unseen to them, the travelator is apparently run by slaves moving it underground, because the World Government is evil. I'm not quite sure why they didn't use any of the One Piece world's technology to run the travelators, but I guess these guys are just flat-out evil?

Speaking of evil, Stelly continues to be a racist shitfuck, while we get a return of another of One Piece's biggest shitfucks, Charloss, the Celestial Dragon that got beaten up by Luffy all the way back in Sabaody, who sees Shirahoshi via his binoculars and gets all excited over seeing a big pretty mermaid. Yeah, this is not going to end well, huh? Shirahoshi gets courted by a lot of noble princes, but of course Shirahoshi has very little tact when dealing with them.

The majority of the chapter is just Luffy's many allies meeting each other. First up is Vivi and Carue meeting Rebecca and Leo of the Tontatta, who in then meet up with Shirahoshi, who then meet up with Sai. Wapol shows up and gets to be an asshole for a while, and then Dalton and Kureha shows up and everyone basically ignores Wapol. There are some jokes that work, some that don't, and we actually get recap panels of some of the older arcs like Alabasta and Drum Kingdom. Everyone basically bonds over their friendships with the Straw Hats, which is neat.

We then cut away to Level 6 of Impel Down, where Doflamingo is just laughing in solitary, talking about the World Government sending an assassin to stop him from telling anyone about the "secret treasure of Mary Geoise", and acts all cryptic. The manga follows suit in acting cryptic as we cut back to Mary Geoise, where a tall dude with a three-pointed crown walks up into an old room and beholds a large straw hat... which is interesting. Apparently in addition to the whole World Government/Celestial Dragon/Revolutionary Army stuff, the Reverie's going to explore... something else? Regarding the straw hat and some secret that Doflamingo knows about? It's not quite as hype-inducing as the previous chapter, because a good chunk of it is just reintroduction and catching up with some old characters, but it's nice to see them again.
