My Hero Academia 208 Review: Bakugou Grows Up

Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 208: The Results of Round 4

It's been pretty noticeable how the recent chapters of My Hero Academia have been somewhat slower-paced, which... which just doesn't make it super-exciting to review week by week, especially when a good chunk of these recent chapters have been just action scenes that take up entire pages on their own.

This one's pretty interesting, though. Team Bakugou's fight lasts all of two chapters (and probably half an episode whenever this gets animated) and last chapter basically is just an introduction of the Class B's abilities. This episode basically shows off how much Bakugou has grown over the series without sacrificing what made him different and interesting in his first place -- his crass, assholish attitude. This isn't some inferior manga where once a character learns his lesson and/or grows as a person, he ends up doing a 180 and becomes docile or neutered, which is something I very much appreciate. Sure, the over-excited AAAAAH's by Monoma is a bit too much, but I do like having this chapter to point out that despite everything, Bakugou has been slowly changing, learning the value of teamwork. Sure, he's a gigantic ass about it and is still obsessed with being number one, but I really do like the thought being put behind having Bakugou grow as a character.

The fight between Team Bakugou and Team Gecko-Lady is pretty standard, though, ending pretty quickly with a pretty simple "oh no, they know teamwork!" lesson that could've honestly been far more exciting than "shit, we expected Bakugou to be rogue, but he's playing well with his team". It's neat, but unlike all of the previous fights, I really don't think that it highlights anyone else other than Bakugou -- Jirou, Sero and Sugar-Boy barely get to do anything, and I don't even remember the abilities and powers of anyone from Class 1B in this fight other than Tokage having the same body-splitting powers as Buggy the Clown from One Piece.
