My Hero Academia 211 Review: Bad Mentors

My Hero Academia, Chapter 211: An Inheritance

I missed out on reviewing last week's chapter, but it's basically a setup of this batch of 1B kids' powers, Monoma grandstanding, and Deku's quirk suddenly exploding at the end as the huge, huge cliffhanger.

This one is... is a bit more interesting. We've got Monoma and Shinsou talking with each other, and we get, surprisingly, some Monoma depths! So far he's been just a one-note asshat that takes competitiveness to new heights, but here we get to briefly learn that he apparently suffers from the same belittling as Shinsou did, the "you'll never be a hero with that sort of quirk!" Monoma tells Shinsou that they're sort of similar, and shows us his world-view -- that heroes can't do everything on their own, and that to be a hero, sometimes you have to do un-hero-like things. It's got some merits, for sure, but at the same time Monoma has been such a consistent douchebag about it that it's hard to root for him. I do like the sudden change to Shinsou being sort of pulled in two hero directions, though. That's neat.

The rest of the chapter is dealing with this.... swirling mass of black-tendril-shadow things that is spreading out of Midoriya's right arm, which just blast the shit out of everyone. I do like it how the 1A and 1B students are just like "oh shit, did he come with a new move?" but Midoriya himself is clearly not in control. The teachers realize what's happening, and goes to stop him... but, of course, it's Uraraka that ends up floating up and calls out to Shinsou for help.

I do like this development, actually. As much as I love how My Hero Academia tries to develop its world instead of the world relative to the main character, I do think it's pretty dang overdue for us to learn a bit more about this mysterious power residing within Midoriya. Overall... kind of a neat chapter. It's more action-packed and I really don't have much to say or speculate.
