Nanatsu no Taizai 206 Review: Resurrecion

Nanatsu no Taizai, Chapter 206: The Beast Roars

So, well, wasn't expecting that. We get a brief scene of Gowther and the mind-controlled Nerobasta approaching the gate to heaven, and Merascylla showing up and having a bit of a talk with Gowther... and then we cut back to the fight.

Again, the fight is awesome, but there really isn't any sense of threat as the Archangels and Commandments rampage. It is very cool for Tamriel's three heads to launch beams to knock the Commandments around, and one gigantic bomb that quishes Galan down onto the ground. Equally cool is Monspiet launching a blast that blows a hole in Tamriel's heads, or Sariel absolutely slashing Monspiet so many times he gets reduced to rags... but it's not shocking because we know Monspiet and Galan will survive the battle. I mean, as awesome as it was to see Galan go all spiky mode, survive Tamriel's blast,  and lift up a ball of energy and drop it on Sariel... we kind of already know that it's going to happen.

And Rudociel riddling Galan with bullets, or outspeeding Derriere, and shooting a hole through Derriere and Monspiet at the same time... again, it's still cool to read, cool to see, and the artwork is pretty top-notch, plus we get these Archangels built up for if/when they show up in the present day to fight Meliodas and the rest of our heroes...

But then what we thought were known quantities, Monspiet and Derriere, suddenly stab their own hands into their chest, a move that freaks Galan the fuck out, who basically drags Fraudrin away to retreat. Both Derriere and Monspiet rip out six of their hearts to 'form a contract', to unleash the true nature of their soul, something Galan say is the 'Indra Transformation'.

So it's like Resurreccion in Bleach, only more visceral and more horrifying. Merascylla notes that this particular technique is taboo, and those who go through the transformation give up their original form and ability to reason. Which begs the question how Monspiet and Derriere managed to regain their original forms in the present day. The result is... well, quite abominable. Monspiet still looks somewhat decent, just with his legs stretched and his arms replaced with these black tentacles, all of which end in hands, but Derriere got turned into a very wild-looking animal. Her hair is a long spiked tentacle ending in a shadowy barb, her left arm is gone, her right arm is replaced with these shadow chain-links that end in a gigantic crab claw. They look... well, pretty freaking weird. And Derriere punches Rudociel in the face.

Overall, still dragging on the past fight, but at least we're learning some more about the actual true strength of the Ten Commandments, which means that there is hope for some of the defeated commandments like Estarossa and Zeldoris to actually return and prove themselves a proper threat against the Seven Sins after their pretty sorry defeat. Who knows, maybe Monspiet and Derriere are still alive -- the only ones we know for sure are dead are Merascylla, Fraudrin, Gray Lord and Galan, and the latter's turned to stone.
