Boku no Hero Academia 45 Review: Cisco Ramon would be proud

Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 45: A Meeting for Trying Out New Names

Unlike what was implied last chapter, this chapter isn't about the whole recommendations thing, but rather something more important -- superhero code names! Cisco Ramon would be proud. But yeah, this entire chapter's devoted to them just picking out their code names. It's slow, but it's kind of fun. Starts off with the students of Class A just basically treated as superstars in public because like they said before, Yuei's sports festival is basically the Olympics.

Eraserhead talks a bit about how nominations will only start mattering after they actually do something worthwile, and like in real life it's not uncommon for their nominators to just lose interest and stuff. Basically Todoroki and Bakugou got votes in the thousands -- Todoroki getting around a thousand more than Bakugou -- while the rest kind of... don't get much. Tokoyami and Iida, the third-rankers, got around 300-ish, Kaminari got 200, Yaoyorozu got around 100, whereas Kirishima, Uraraka and Sero (-looks up, oh, cellotape dude-) got less than that, and the rest don't get anything.

Todoroki does lampshade that a good chunk of his nominations are because of his father's pull, though. Eraserhead brings in Midnight -- is she supposed to be showing off her tits? Doesn't look like she's wearing anything over those boobs but she could just be wearing something skintight and light coloured -- to help them out in picking their superhero names.

And it's just a fun little series of superhero names! Let's do a bullet form, shall we?

  • Stupid belly-button-laser guy chooses "I Can't Stop Twinkling" because he's a dumb-dumb.
  • Ashido chooses "Alien Queen" and people are actually referencing the Alien movies with a funny doodle of Ashido as a Xenomorph. I had to look up Ashido's name, and I think I'll be calling her Alien Queen forever from now on. She changes it to "Pinky" later on but you'll forever be Alien Queen to me.
  • Tsuyu picks the adorable "Froppy", which suits her.
  • Kirishima picks "Red Riot", apparently as a homage to a retro hero called Crimson Riot. Do like the little worldbuilding here plus the comparison with Midoriya and All Might's situation.
  • Kyouka (who I had to look up as well) is "Earphone Jack" and I'm going to never remember her real name from now on.
  • Shouji picks the rather appropriate "Tentacle". Dude hasn't showed up in a while!
  • Sero picks "Cellophane" and he's another one whose real name I'm never ever going to remember.
  • Tail-dude is "Tail Man". Apparently his real name is Ojiro? Don't care. Tail Man forever.
  • Thick-lips-dude is "Sugar Man". Do we even know his quirk? I don't know.
  • Kaminari is "Charge-zuma" which is a pun on the Japanese word for lightning bolt... even though Kaminari already means lightning.
  • Tooru the invisible girl is "Invisible Girl", and she can join the ranks of people who I won't have to look up names for again.
  • Momo is "Creatie", which is kind of a lame superhero name.
  • Todoroki just wants his name "Shouto" because he's weird. How did the talk with his mother go?
  • Tokoyami is "Tsukuyomi", which is not just the name of Uchiha Itachi's super genjutsu but an actual god of the night from Japanese mythology.
  • Mineta is "Grape Juice" which is apparently what his Japanese name means or something? Eh, suits him pretty well.
  • Weird rock dude which the internet tells me is called Kouji is "Anima".
  • Uraraka is "Uravity", which works better in Japanese pronunciation but still pretty nice.
  • Bakugou chooses what is translated "King of Explodo-Kills", which gets rejected flat out. I dunno, I think it suits Bakugou really well. He revises it to "Baron of Explodo-Kills" which I would argue is more awesome but Midnight, who accepted Belly Button's stupid name choice, doesn't pick it either.
  • Iida has a flashback to meeting his brother Ingenium, who's basically paralyzed for life and asks Iida to take over the Ingenium name all comic-book style... but Iida still can't bear to take over the Ingenium mantle so he just writes his own name. Man, Iida.
  • Midoriya chooses "Deku" because despite writing a notebook's worth of All Might inspired names, he wants to claim the nickname that used to be an insult or something like that.

Well, that's going to make referring to a lot of the background characters -- Alien Queen, Tail Man, Cellophane, Invisible Man and the rest -- a lot easier.

Also at the end of the episode apparently Midoriya got a recommendation that turned All Might's face all ker-aaaazy and it's a glorious panel to behold. Who gave Midoriya that recommendation? Why is All Might so surprised?
