Toriko 326 Review: Black Hole Whale & Pairing Up

Toriko, Chapter 326: Surprising Combinations

So not much happened in this chapter, technically, but it's still a lot more content than One Piece and Bleach this week. It's just splitting up our characters to the different areas -- apparently they'll be tackling five areas simultaneously and I do sincerely hope we see all of them. But first, introductions to Jiji. Apparently the island we saw last chapter is just the air-hole of this giant Magneticlam that's like a big underwater building. But also a giant clam.

Starjun immediately asserts to Jiji's authenticity as the Gold Chef by commenting on the soup he serves them, which is made up of Puzzle Plankton -- a group of plankton shaped like actual puzzle pieces and apparently different combinations of putting them together gives out different tastes. Because the cooking in this manga isn't already ridiculously insane enough. Freaking puzzle plankton. I just can't really comment on that other than laugh at how insanely ridiculous it is.

Toriko and Starjun exchange some words, and Starjun note that Midora apparently now knows who to 'aim his tongue spear at'. Freaking tongue spear, oh, Midora, you and your crazy-gross ability. So I guess he knows all about Acacia and wants revenge. Jiji and Komatsu talk about the old notebook in the Gourmet Pyramid for a bit, and Jiji note how the Blue Nitro is waiting for even more good taste from Komatsu.

Also, apparently Jiji's "mustache"? Those are his eyebrows and his real gross-looking eyes are under there. So his beard is his Nitro beak, and those sunglasses are above his eyebrows. Good lord, Jiji, you weird looking fuck. (Toriko and the rest agree with me).

Jiji looks at everyone for a bit and then decides that a good majority needs to remain in Area 6 because it's a difficult area to tackle. Also because a majority of the people there are chefs and we've established that Area 6 is a chef-specific area. Also we finally get the identity of the Eight King member living in Area 6, and it's not a shark or kraken like I thought it would be, but a whale! Specifically, the Whale King named Moon, also known as the Black Hole Whale. Because not only does he have a carapace that looks like the goddamned moon's surface, Moon is also an actual black hole, absorbing light and matter. And apparently he's the greatest of all eight kings.

Remember how stupidly gigantic Heracles was? And Heracles is a horse. Wouldn't be surprised of Whale King Moon is as large as the moon. I mean, he's already a Black Hole Whale, after all.

Jiji then quickly describes Areas 2 through 5 (which we already glimpsed before during the IGO-NEO war) since they're going to go for Area 1 -- which contains the appetizer instead of God, surprisingly -- after they get everything.

Area 5 is the 'Food Region Forest', with the meat course 'News', and tackling it will be Zebra and Buranchi. No surprises there, the two are basically a perfect fit for each other since the get go. Area 4 is the floating park 'Gourmet Garden', and contains the dessert 'Earth', and being sent there are Sani and... Livebearer. Who Sani never interacted with before. Because crack pairings are funny, you see -- Livebearer even gets a hilarious little '?' despite looking all serious. Area 4 suits Sani really well, though, it's got the snake and Sani was going for Earth, as I remember. But still, freaking Livebearer!

Area 3 is a bridge in the sky, the 'Developmental Fever Bridge', containing Acacia's drink 'Atom'. It's in the sky so the king there will be the crow, and Coco does want Atom, so Coco is being sent there with Tairan, which is what everyone thought would happen when we learned of the existence of a poison-specialist chef. It's not hinted as much as Zebra and Buranchi, but this doesn't surprise me that much. Area 2, the 'Continent of Beginnings', contains the main course 'God', and being sent there are Toriko and Starjun, which is fucking awesome.

Area 1 contains the appetizer, 'Center', and will be tackled once everyone got their mark. Jiji continues to ramble on about that while in the background Sani and Buranchi are like "objection!" while the Coco-Tairan and Toriko-Starjun pairs are like "um, yo."

So yeah not a lot happened, but I'm looking forward to seeing how these people interact. Livebearer and Sani especially.
