One Piece 766 Review: Bad Blood Between Brothers

One Piece Chapter 766: Smile

We're still in Trafalgar Law's flashback, and after the big reveal about the D. middle name (which is nicely vague enough to give us a massive aura of mystery, yet gives us enough to keep us guessing) we continue on with the plot where Rocinante and Law are about to bust the little deal for the Ope Ope no Mi, with both Doflamingo's forces and the Marines closing in.

The Marines, led by a younger Tsuru (who honestly doesn't look that different), is lying in Swallow Island in preparation to attack the Doflamingo pirates when they show up. A different group on Minion Island heard the gunshots from the Barrel pirates' lair, where Rocinante had, off-screen defeated the large amount of people surrounding him from last chapter although there's a fair amount of blood spilt.

Literally the next panel is Rocinante making a peace sign holding the fruit up with the goofiest smile on his face, which I thought was funny. Rocinante then literally just shoves the Ope Ope no Mi into Law's mouth and like everyone who eats Devil Fruits, comments that it is disgusting. Rocinante then collapses, having been wounded far worse than his goofy face would suggest. I thought that it was nice how he's all 'we've outwitted Doflamingo'. Pretty bad blood between the two of them.

I do like how Rocinante is all 'I made a blunder', and Law just can't get the abilities of his Ope Ope no Mi to immediately activate, which I thought was realistic especially considering such a technical fruit like the Ope Ope no Mi. Though Law did study a bit of medicine with his father and everything, I'm sure he'll be able to use it in no time.

Rocinante certainly has a plan beyond just healing Law and trying to get away from Doflamingo, and sends Law to give a letter to the Marines. Unfortunately, he picks Vergo of all people with a piece of sausage or squid or whatever on his cheek, leading to Law's beef with Vergo that we saw a while back. Just bad luck there, Law. We get hints that the contents of the letter can save everyone in Dressrosa, but we don't see what exactly is in it. Naturally.

Law begs Vergo to help save Rocinante with that pitiful One Piece crying look, and I do like how Vergo, even after his (presumed) death in the Punk Hazard arc, is still being a pretty awesome character infiltrating the Marines and all that. Rocinante and Vergo recognize each other, and Vergo calls him 'the Second Corazon'. Really curious on who exactly the first Corazon is, now. Rocinante slips up and reveals that he can talk, surprising Vergo, and Vergo reads the letter, and then just brutally kicks Rocinante in the face. Man, poor bastard.

Vergo kicks Law away without effort, and then just pummels on poor Rocinante with Armament Haki. Vergo tells us that Rocinante disappeared when he was eight, and then reappeared fourteen years later. Plenty of time to be indoctrinated by the Marines or to lose Doflamingo's indoctrination and see some sense. Vergo goes all 'Dofy never suspected you because you're his brother!'

Man, it's a good feeling knowing that Vergo got blown up by Law.

Vergo said Rocinante 'claimed' to be Doflamingo's brother, but I'm going to assume that he really is because Rocinante did appear in all the flashbacks and there's not going to be any crazy duplicate thing or whatever.

We cut away from the beatdown and Vergo leaves a really beat-up Law to call Doflamingo, who has this extremely irritated, pissed off look on his face which is always unnatural to look at on him.

Doflamingo has already discovered the Marine ships, and puts two and two together that his brother betrayed him... which, in retrospect, was a pretty stupid plan though they would've gotten away if it wasn't for their bad luck stumbling into Vergo.

Doflamingo's ship has a giant flamingo as a figurehead. A giant flamingo with his glasses. That is awesome.

I also cannot get used to the younger members of the Doflamingo pirates. I mean, Diamante, Peeka and Gladius look more or less the same, and Trebol's only a bit skinnier (and looks like a slimy version of MCU's Mandarin) but Lao G, Jora, Machvise and especially Senor Pink look just so damn different! And Buffalo's apparently a big guy now, reaching his present-day height. Baby 5 is still really short, though, and she's holding Doflamingo's phone for him.

Dellinger and Sugar (who's mentioned to be sorta older?) are noticeably absent. Well, technically Viola and Monet, too, but they don't come into play until they reach Dressrosa.

Doflamingo goes on about how his pirates are the only family he needs. We always knew that Doflamingo is a bit sweet on his family, but I'm itching to know the exact reason why. I would also like to see all of them have some proper fight scenes in the present-day scenes instead of just one-panel hints. He gets all angry about the Ope Ope no Mi being stolen, and Vergo being a bit of a dumbass just didn't pay attention while Law and Rocinante escape.

Doflamingo sets up his Birdcage attack, trapping everyone inside the island, and it seems we're going to get a showdown between the beat-up Rocinante and Doflamingo. I'm pretty sure we still have a chapter or two of this flashback going on, but I really do like it. Presumably next chapter or the one after that Doflamingo will kill Rocinante, and then make Law the third Corazon. Law's cool, Doflamingo's cool, and I'm pretty invested in their story. I just wish the present-day sections aren't so messy with so many characters that anyone who's not Luffy, Law, Doflamingo, Rebecca or Kairos (or however you spell his name) have been kind of sidelined in their battles and everything. But it's still cool, the arc's still not died down yet and the buildup to this arc has been pretty brilliant. I just hope it ends well.
