Toriko 300 Review: Total Beatdown

Toriko Chapter 300: Fierce Attacks and Roars

The entire chapter is just taken up by the Four Kings beating the shit out of the Goritaurus. If the kung fu monkey mooks from the last two chapters seem to be giving the Four Kings a bit of trouble, well that's because they haven't really gotten serious yet. We've got a shit-ton of cool stuff here, with the very first attack being Zebra slicing that gigantic anus-mouthed mound in half with his Supersonic Voice Cutter, which was badass as hell. I'm glad that the real Goritaurus ends up not being the big anus-mouthed thing but a more conventional-looking monkey inside, because that thing weirds me out too much. Doesn't really make sense that, you know, the Goritaurus' vision would be split if only the shell or whatever was cut apart, but maybe it's just got a really unique biology.

The Goritaurus has these creepy-ass little monkey faces to hold the two halves of his bisected body together, which I thought was creepy and weird as hell.

I did like how Zebra's trash-talk to Goritaurus was something along the lines of 'I'm going to slice you down to the double helices of your DNA' or something like that. Made me laugh. And then he proceeds to just slice this giant mountain-sized monster in half with his freaking voice. Man, I do like Zebra.

We see a little combination attack thing between Coco and Toriko with this rapid-fire Poison Fork thing, which is cool.

After revealing his real body, the Goritaurus apparently can use some kind of hyper beam or some shit, so the Denshark just acid-vomits on the ground and gets the hell out of dodge. And finally, we see the return of Sani's (Sunny, Sani, whatever) Satan Hair since the whole big war thing with the Bishokukai. And apparently dude's gotten better at controlling it, wrapping it on his left hand and basically eating the energy blast. We see how Toriko, Coco and Zebra use their respective abilities to cover themselves up in shields and the Nitro person (Caca? Name escapes me at the moment) just... lifts her cloak. I thought that was funny.

Coco comments on seeing Satan Hair for the first time, and Sani explains how Satan Hair can spit what it ate right back out... followed with a chilling sight of Tommyrod's face among what I presume to be other beasts Sani had eaten with his hair. Is this a possible return for Tommyrod? Can Sani shoot out bugs from his hair? Quite interesting, and I really would like to see Tommyrod's return. He's the weirdest, most psychotic Vice Chef and I thought it's a shame he died so early, even if it was a well-written death scene.

Sani Satan Vomits the hyper beam back at the Goritaurus, and Zebra does his own thing, transforming his arm into his Grim Reaper Demon's arm or whatever the hell those things are called. For a moment it seems that the Goritaurus just deflects the punch away with the weird Enbu tactics that the trooper monkeys do (which I think can be compared to one of the Rokushiki skills from One Piece?) but Sani's there to give it a Satan Hair-boosted Hair Spatula and the punch hits the Goritaurus. Cool stuff.

Coco does his Mold Poison Spear thing again which he used against Invitedeath or whatever that was called, and while it initially didn't do shit, Coco reveals later that apparently it's not a fatal poison, but instead a Devil Poison: a poison that causes addiction, and the effects on the Goritaurus seems to imply that this was the exact poison that Coco used against Grinpatch way back during the war. Seems like Grinpatch isn't mind-controlled by NEO after all, which is cool. I like Grinpatch.

Toriko just trash-talks the Goritaurus, saying that he's no match for the Eight Kings even if there are ten thousand of him, and just Jet Forks the Goritaurus' right arm apart. We get a chilling scene of Coco's freaky-looking poison demon just dripping the Devil Poison into the Goritaurus' mouth, and that's over.

And that was fast. That was one of the four monkey masters down, and we get some 'enjoy food together' moment with Toriko telling the high-as-fly Goritaurus to enjoy food with the other monkeys. Caca does some cryptic words and we get our first good look at Bambina.

It's a fun, fast-paced fighting chapter that's all just cool attacks being thrown around, but I love it for that. I also like how the difficulty level isn't immediately reset, how they have to work from the bottom up and everything. They can be badasses and take down at least one of the four, though I doubt the other three would be so simple. Maybe the other instructors will team up, or maybe the Four Kings will get separated, or maybe Goritaurus is just shittier than the other three. Pretty excited to see what will go on next... the whole monkey continent thing doesn't really bother me too much other than being a lot of potentially awesome fights, nor is Komatsu's revival because really there's no way he's in danger. I'm a lot more interested about NEO, about the fate of the Zero Biotope, about the whole Nitro thing, about where the hell the Bishokukai is and everything else. But fight scenes will tide me over until we see other people. Want to see more of the crazy shit like Devil Poison and Satan Hair, as well as combination attacks and oni materialization and all that.
