My Hero Academia 163 Review: Recovery

Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 163: Smoldering Flames

Pretty good chapter! It's one that focuses more on recovery, to be honest. We get to see the 1A class and have some fun little interactions. It's nice to see some characters we haven't seen in a fair while like Mineta and Momo and Iida, and some fun moments from them as well. We get a brief flashback for Uraraka and Aizawa where she confesses that she felt super-helpless for being helpless and all that, which is a neat little moment. Also, considering the new backstory we got between Kirishma and Ashido, it's neat that the two of them also have a brief interaction here.

We also get a brief recap later on about the Gran Tourino situation, and apparently he managed to capture Kurogiri (or Black Mist or whatever you want to call him), but they met a particularly powerful individual that they couldn't defeat, and that it's a walking disaster. I'm not sure if we've seen this guy before. Is it that one hulking dude in Kirishima's flashback in the yakuza arc? I can't be 100% sure, but if it is, it's a neat bit of foreshadowing.

We then get to Bakugou and Todoroki's new provisional license thing, and apparently instead of Aizawa (which is very realistically tied up with all the politics behind the recent operation) they're going to be tested by Present Mic and All Might. Can I just say how much I love Mic's expression? He's just so hilariously over-the-top. To be honest, I kind of want to start watching the anime just to hear what Present Mic's voice sounds like.

Speaking of Present Mic, apparently Endeavor shows up in front of All Might, says some things along the lines of "thank you for looking after my son, I want to have words with you" and Mic's amazing response is "IMMA GO BUY SOME COFFEE BYE!". I definitely hope we actually get to see the interaction between those two.

We also get the revelation that Bakugou and Todoroki aren't the only ones to enter the provisional test, we got Shiketsu students! Three of them, anyway. We've got the real Camie (apparently Toga didn't kill her), the Gale dude (google tells me his name is Reppu) and the psychotic, super-competitive Meatball douche that Bakugou calls Shitshitkura, so that's what I'm going to call him from now on.

Overall, a neat little transitional/setup chapter, and I'm definitely glad to see more of Bakugou and Todoroki.
