My Hero Academia 167 Review: Father-Son Apologies

Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 167: A Hero's Starting Line

More of a transitional chapter than anything, really. We get a brief cooldown as Gang Orca talks about the rowdy kids and quirky adults and everything. None of it is bad, it's just... there. There's a hilarious little lampshade of Camie's weird lolfam speech gimmick and all that, but otherwise it's all well and good. The biggest part, I think, is the talk with Endeavour. Endeavour and Todoroki are still clearly not going to be a loving pair of father and son, but I did like that Endeavour at least is learning something from his conversation with All Might and witnessing the whole "becoming an inspiration" deal, trying to reach out for his son and trying to be a hero that Todoroki can be proud of. This change apparently got Inasa to start forgiving him (with a face-punch, which is hilarious) and everything. It's perhaps slightly stilted and awkward, but it's that awkwardness on all sides of the conversation that really makes this feel somewhat human.

Endeavour's crimes are apparent, and I really hope that they don't just brush away all of his dickery in trying to ''breed" a perfect child and essentially fuck Todoroki's childhood all in the name of his own goals, as well as the abuse to his wife... and while one good deed doesn't negate all of his jackassery in the past, I've always loved how Endeavour's status as a hero and an abusive husband/father are juxtaposed against each other. He's trying to be a better man, and I do like it -- character growth! I just hope that Endeavour's story is well-told and not just "welp he's nice now" like so many other shonen manga. But I do trust in Boku no Hero enough to deliver at least an interesting character arc.

We get a brief recap of Eri, and apparently her horn, the source of her quirk, is decreasing and she can't be used as a plot device all that often. I'm not sure if I'm happy about this or not, but eh. Whatever. We get a bit of classtime talk (Tokoyami thinks that a difficult question is a 'question of darkness'. Bless the boy). But the final leg of the chapter is just building up Aoyama's weirdness as he looks at Midoriya eating and apparently stalks him home. The next mini-arc seems to be all about Aoyama, then -- many people are freaking out in thinking that Aoyama is confirmed to be the traitor from the scene, but I don't think so -- if they're going to reveal the traitor (and I don't think it'll happen for some time), I think it's going to be far more epic than this random buildup to "o hey Aoyama is suspicious". Some neat artwork in it all, and a couple of great moments for Endeavour and Todoroki.
