My Hero Academia 219 Review: Economical Villainy

Boku no Hero Academia, Chapter 219: Go, Slide and Go

I didn't do a review of chapter 218 because... well, there's no real excuse, honestly, but I just didn't find the time to do it. Briefly, it's just a nice little introduction of the currently-unnamed CEO of the Detnerat Company, the establishment that he's a calm, reasonable person hiding some psychopathic tendencies underneath, and that he's a member of the Meta Liberation Army that was founded by his father, the great villain Destro -- who I know we've seen before!

This chapter's bulk is taken up by Todoroki and Bakugou fighting against a band of thieves, in an action scene that ended up running for a bit longer than I had expected. It's pretty cool, though, and I do like how the scene ends up highlighting just how much these guys have improved, with Bakugou having the foresight to take back the stolen properties before he blows the fuck up of the thieves. All the while still shit-talking them. I do find it hilarious that the leader of the thieves apparently had a quirk based on carbonated water, too!

We get the brief introduction of a random her, Slide n' Go, who the chapter is named after but... but he honestly doesn't really end up feeling that prominent other than having a face that never really changes even as he zips around and makes huge, hammy scenery-eating lines of dialogue. I suppose this is a character that'll be more memorable in the anime? As it is, though, other than Todoroki and Bakugou being badasses, the real spotlight of this scene is the fact that the thieves are apparently using black-market equipment that self-destruct after the criminals are captured, and that these equipment are sending data back to Destro Jr and his organization.

Destro Junior has apparently sent out his men to capture Broker Giran, a dude that is affiliated with the Villain Alliance. I remember him! I've always thought that the idea of an underworld broker to be pretty cool, and this guy showing up and refusing to cooperate, being all cocky and defiant. Meanwhile, Destro Jr is just... he just flashes a creepy smile, telling him that this will be the 'start of a fruitful business partnership'. I'm not as enamoured with Destro Jr quite yet, but I do like the fact that we seem to be alternating between serious and comedic arcs. After Overhaul, we got Gentle, and now we get this guy. The fact that this seems to be leading to a three-way conflict is also interesting.

Even more interesting is the final two-page spread of "about one month ago", around the time of the hero ranking announcements, where the mysterious Gigantomachia is beating up the Villain Alliance, muttering that "this isn't enough, All For One". Always a treat to see Twice say one of his oxymoronic lines, and I am definitely all for exploring the mysteries behind Gigantomachia. We'll see.
