My Hero Academia 220 Review: Angry Lizard Boy

My Hero Academia, Chapter 220: My Villain Academia

Definitely an interesting chapter of My Hero Academia, even if it's placed slowly. It's meant to mainly just be setup, though, hopefully for a longer villain alliance centric arc. We start off with a pretty long scene of "look at how badass our villains are!" as they kill a bunch of other villains that clearly just there to get defeated. It's an old trope, but one that I genuinely do enjoy. So fun, bloody scenes with our villains killing the cultists -- special note goes to that panel with mr. Compress, which looks pretty damn painful.

We get to see the Villain Alliance straight up murder the "Church of Racial Cleanliness", and briefly set up the fact that 'mutant' type quirks are discriminated against in this world, which is particularly appropriate to Spinner being out main POV character in this chapter. I've never really cared all that much for Spinner, and in the words taken from this chapter, I've always just viewed him as "that one Stain cosplayer". We get how Spinner has been increasingly unsatisfied with the state of their supposedly holy and meaningful mission, but living in dilapidated ruins, stealing from random criminals and being out of money for their equipment is grating on Spinner. It's not quite as engaging as when Twice or Shigaraki were the highlights of the chapters that focused on them, but eh.

We basically get Shigaraki mulling about how they've been directionless ever since Kurogiri/Blackmist was captured, and Spinner starts asking Shigaraki's motivations and how they relates to Stain. It's... it's kind of one-note, but I definitely do like giving Spinner some added depth.

Of course, everything gets interrupted when Gigantomachia shows up. Everyone is initially happy that there is a power left behind by their master... and then Gigantomachia fights them, wanting them to prove their strength, and then cries because they are so god damn weak. The cliffhanger is All For One's doctor calling them on the radio, which is... it's an interesting development, for sure. I do really like the Villain Alliance, and I'm curious to see where we're going with them.
