Boku no Hero Academia 121 Review: Previous Successor?

My Hero Academia, Chapter 121: Second Semester Opening Ceremony

Well, I'm going to wait until some decent translations of Attack on Titan comes out before I do that review. What a headache to read.

Anyway, Academia. The chapter opens with a quick close-down of last chapter's confrontation. There's a quick resolution of events where All Might (thankfully off-screen! If this was Fairy Tail, we would have had insipid scenes talking about the actual recap) tells Bakugou of everything, and Bakugou notes what he must do -- surpass the best hero -- hasn't changed, but this time it's surpassing Midoriya, and it's the same thing that Midoriya notes, that he himself has to surpass Bakugou.

We then have Aizawa confronting Bakugou and Midoriya, but All Might (who, of course, stopped Aizawa several chapters back) gives an explanation to Aizawa, noting that he is to blame. But not without spilling the secret of One For All -- is Aizawa not in on the charade? All Might notes how the fight was brought out by Bakugou's inferiority complex erupting after feeling guilty about All Might's retirement. Which is a partial truth, but All Might places the blame on them, as the adults, for not taking care of Bakugou's mental health. Aizawa relents, but still gives the two of them house arrest and cleaning duties as punishment because rules are rules.

The next morning, the other members of Class 1A are just super shocked as they react to the fact that Midoriya and Bakugou got into a fight. The two of them are left to clean the dormitory while the rest of the class attends the opening ceremony of the second semester, and while not looking in each other's eyes while cleaning the room, Bakugou gives Midoriya some tips about how to fight with his Shoot Style, albeit in a tsundere "it pisses me off" style. That was heartwarming and probably the best you'll ever get out of Bakugou.

We get Iida and the rest of 1A gathering and all, and we get Monoma, a.k.a. Douchebag From Class 1B, making fun of 1A, and apparently everyone from 1B passed, which actually gives Monoma some reason to gloat. No reason to be such a huge dickbag about it, but hey. We get devil-horn girl from 1B, who finally gets a name! She's called Tsunotori Pony, and she's apparently a foreigner from America (because 'Tsunotori' is such a common name in the U.S. of A.) and she speaks in a foreign, unnatural manner, and she looks nice, but Monoma teaches her how to say some really... polite things. "I can't wait to beat the shit out of them!" Yeah, that's what I teach my foreigner friends too, actually.

We get the return of 'mind control' Shinshou, who tells the little commotion to fuck off, and they note that Shinshou seems a little rougher. Has the villain association gotten in touch with him? Or some of the other academies? It is a huge part of Shinshou's character that his powers kind of give him the stigma of being stuck with a 'villain's power', so it would be interesting if he actually got turned.

Principal mouse or whatever his name is shows up with a stupid-long speech that bores the crowd so much that Kaminari plays with Ojirou's tail. Then the speech gets serious as they talk about the incident of All Might losing his powers, and note how it will affect the world and especially the world of superheroics, and how the successors to the society are these young heroes. There are some talk about a hero internship, but apparently the students are as clueless as I am as to what this is.

What's interesting is the final panel as Principal walks off the podium, and we get a flashback to All Might talking to the Principal in the past, and apparently one of the reasons of All Might working at U.A. is to look for a successor among the gifted young talents in U.A. We see All Might looking into the crowd and the vague outline of someone's head... did All Might already try to recruit a successor, one of the older students, from U.A.? Was it Shinshou, because that could be his head if you squint enough? That's interesting, and totally came out of nowhere. Overall the chapter was slightly weaker compared to the emotionally driven Bakugou-Midoriya fightfrom the previous few chapters, but hey, it's not a bad read.
