Nanatsu no Taizai 106 Review: Power Levels & Distractions

Nanatsu no Taizai Chapter 106: Balor's Power Eye

So Meliodas' big one-page "objection" from last chapter... is only him trying to goad out all the Holy Knights that are opposed to him being honoured by the king. And as it turns out, there are a fair bit of discontentment among the other Knights. Three of them -- the Dogget, Death Pierce and Wayeo, all of whom look like massive douches -- are apparently stationed on the border during the whole Hendricksen crisis so they're just being assholes, and are known as the Six Stars of the Azure Sky... even though there are three of them.

Dogget, the dude in the black shirt, is the most vocal one and they basically just want to test out the Sins' powers. We get a fun Hawk scene where he goes all 'Meliodas will fight in my stead' and rattles off some numbers: Dogget's power level is apparently 830, with more than half coming from 'Strength'.

We then get a flashback to Merlin giving Hawk this wacky spiral-shaped earring called Balor's Power Eye, which is basically like a scouter from Dragon Ball. Merlin is nice. Also, the power level is also broken down into Power, Strength and Spirit, with power corresponding to magic, strength to physical strength and spirit to, well, determination and whatnot. Merlin reveals that a Holy Knight apprentice has a power level of around 145, and a Holy Knight at around 300. We also get a really, really fun moment of Merlin telling Hawk that if his power level is 3000 (if you multiply it by a hundred). It's fun and rather endearing. I like Merlin.

We cut back to the present and of course Meliodas dodges every single one of Dogget's punches, and manages to strike back at his head, but Dogget goes 'you are a weakling, Dreyfus and Hendricksen are weaklings' and all, and also takes the time to take a piss at Griamor. Meliodas then returns the trash-talking, telling Dogget that he basically doesn't even begin to compare to Dreyfus or Hendricksen since he lacks determination. This pisses Dogget off and he goes all 'power is everything' and he rains down a lot of blows... and Meliodas kind of fights back, this time, and pulverizes Dogget's hands, and then knocks him down. Also we learn that Meliodas' power level is 3370, with his power being 400, strength 960 and spirit 2010. Well, I guess Meliodas knows what he's talking about when he's ranting on about spirit, isn't he?

It's not the most uninteresting thing in the world, since seeing the main character beat up arrogant fucks is fun... but at the same time there are a lot more important and interesting stuff we could be focusing on. Ban and King, for one. Gowther's whole armour thing. Merlin and her apparent betrayal in the past. Hunting down Hendricksen. But no, instead we get this really filler-y episode. For a standalone chapter I suppose it's fine, and I suppose a little break in between the Ban/King thing is all right, but I have this feeling that we're going to see all three of the Azure Sky whatever fight the Sins and that will take a while. I do hopefully we don't see any of these three any longer than we should.
