Fairy Tail 467 Review: Designated Girl Fights

Fairy Tail, Chapter 467: Mother's Key

We get a little montage of Lyon and the rest of the non-Jura Lamia Scale people beating up Alvarez's mooks. Even Oobabababasama got in on the act, which was actually quite funny. Wahlricht, who really looks a wee bit like Cobra and Gajeel did a fusion dance, summons these missiles and shoots them. Apparently Beth from Mermaid Heel got hit, though the art is ambiguous about her situation. I'm sure she will survive, even if I have no fucking clue what she does, but I remember her design as one of Mermaid Heel's five named members. Only Kagura and Millianna are actually people though that won't stop this manga from killing off the utter nobody that is Beth.

Kagura does get a bit of a nice screentime here, slicing up missiles and exchanging a couple of sword blows with DiMaria... but honestly, Mermaid Heel never really felt like a big threat. Yes, Kagura was a big presence and she looks and acts badass... but the only real person Kagura has ever defeated was Yukio and she's weak even among Sabertooth members -- who are established to be pretty shit when compared to Fairy Tail and Tartaros people. And Kagura giving Erza a bit of a hard time stems mostly from Jellal drama and random misunderstood feelings and Minerva fucking everyone up. So Kagura's honestly not that good in the grand scheme of things. She ain't going to be able to really do shit to DiMaria... though I'm all for non-Fairy-Tail people actually showing that they matter. This is Kagura's chance to prove to me that these minor characters actually matter after their one-off arcs. Maybe Lyon can help. Lyon hasn't been relevant since... er... his introduction arc, I think. He did get a couple of lines with an idiotic "oh my god he's dead... except not really" moment during the Oracion Seis arc. Lyon could do some things.

The second half of the chapter shows Lucy and Cana dealing with Brandish, and it's honestly extremely uninteresting. I don't really give a fuck that Brandish's mother seemed to be (it will be a misunderstanding I guarantee you) killed by Layla Heartfilia, nor is the big 'plot twist' that Layla might be a bad guy anything remotely game-breaking because Layla has jack shit of a presence in the manga. She's Lucy's mother, yes, but all we saw of her was a couple of panels from flashbacks. Hell, I think she has as much screentime as Metallicana did. It's nice, really, that the manga goes out of the way to try and make Lucy relevant, but it ends up falling flat. Oh, Aquarius found her way back from the spirit realm despite the dramatic destruction of her key in the Tartaros arc... except it's really not that big of a surprise considering that the Celestial Spirit rules are basically subject to 'whatever the fuck we're buddies' after Lucy befriended the Celestial Spirit King. It's going to be a big misunderstanding, and Brandish will probably join the side of the good simply because she has nice tits. Like literally almost every single female character that can be redeemed has been redeemed, with only Ikaruga from the Tower of Heaven, Kyouka from Tartaros and the non-entities from Avatar being the exceptions.

It's not entirely uninteresting, of course, and a good improvement compared to the bland Natsu/Zeref faceoff that was nothing but a cocktease, but it still seems to be heading down a very predictable route. Prove me wrong, Fairy Tail
