One Piece 882 Review: Awakened Katakuri

One Piece, Chapter 882: Outside a Yonkou's Expectations

An okay chapter. We get more fighting scenes between Luffy and Katakuri, which was what I was anticipating. We get some badass lines from Katakuri, we get more establishment that he's a good boss (at least to his 'little sister' Brulee, anyway) and this time he's not just mimicking Luffy's powers, but doing some skills of his own. He uses his trident, the Mogura Spear, to stab into a wall and cause it to explode. Luffy gets some cool moves using his rubber body to whiplash all over the place and evade the trident strikes. Katakuri then unleashes his Devil Fruit's awakening, which is transforming the entire room into mochi and controlling it. I'm not sure I'm that excited, mind you. I'm not sure if I'll be happy if devil fruit awakenings are just "turn everything into your element" -- that'd be boring. I really wish Katakuri will do something more than what Doflamingo did with his own awakening as well.

We get a bit of Brulee informing Big Mom and Perospero about the things that she overheard from Luffy, which is their meeting spot. Except apparently Big Mom gets distracted and is going to Nuts Island? Eh.

The meeting between the Big Mom Pirates officers is a bit more interesting, because we get Baron Tamago talking about how everything has been one unexpected occurrence after another, and it's been a "they wouldn't have gotten away if X didn't happen". Mind you, a good chunk actually has been blind luck, and he gets into an argument with Mont D'or about how not everything that has happened is 'by chance', and that apparently something has happened to the undersea sea slug network... which I'm assuming is Jinbe's crew's work.

We also get to see Capone's ship, the Nostra Castello, and they, too, are heading to Cacao Island. And the last scene is a report from one Nusstrorte or however you pronounce his name, reporting that the Germa 66 has been crushed... when in reality, the four Germa siblings have completely fucked up the Big Mom Pirate army sent there. Okay? I'm not sure if I'm at all excited about the Germa's return considering how relatively blah they have been, especially since we're already having pacing issues with Big Mom, the Sanji subplot and the pirates anyway. So... eh.
