Toriko 358 Review: Crisis on Infinite Earths

Toriko, Chapter 358: Creepy Neo

A decent, if wholly uneventful chapter. The biggest takeaway, I think, is the revelation that the Blue Nitro came from another parallel universe or whatever in pursuit of Neo. We get some extra scenes of Neo being super creepy and terrifying, and the blue Nitro enslaving the red and getting them to prepare and cook a planet. Also apparently Don Slime actually defeated Neo one time in the distant past. And Neo is all like Cthulhu Lite of sorts, disappearing for periods of time to allow civilizations and whatnot to grow.

In the present day, Sunny is the only sane man, Zebra is all like "Neo sounds like a decent fellow" and Komatsu is all like "maybe he hasn't eaten anything tasty enough." I... really don't want Neo to be defeated by another Komatsu-can-cook-super-awesome moment. Please?

Midora refuses to ally himself with Joie, saying that he's not interested in the whole universes of food thing, and only for the dining table in front of him. Aw, character moments. Afro Nitro is all like 'all the gourmet cells destroyed by Neo do not regenerate' so the immortal Nitro are all afraid, whereas Jiro, transformed into this horrifying-looking thing, doesn't give a shit. "Maybe I should go teach Neo the real way to apply terror" is probably one of the best lines ever.

Meanwhile Don Slime is beating up Neo.

Man, I really, really like what's going on all over the world right now in Toriko, but the pacing is just so wonky with big fights interrupted with a crapton of flashbacks and whatnot. One might wonder that all this might've been meant to be given in piecemeal over the four areas that we skipped... eh. What can you do .
