Fairy Tail 510 Review: Journey into the Heart

Fairy Tail, Chapter 510: Natsu's Heart

Wow, the conversation in the beginning with Lucy and the rest of the people there is really insipid, isn't it? Trusting that your friend isn't evil is one thing. Sounding like a brainless dunce while doing so is another. Yeah, Lucy, pout and say all the stuff about how Natsu got you into the guild and get flustered. That totally builds up confidence and gives them solutions as to what to do with Natsu's evil side. It's one thing if Lucy had been talking about how, say, E.N.D. is not the Natsu they knew, not the real Natsu or whatever, but this is just Lucy going "NO!" to any criticisms against Natsu. In other words, like your average Fairy Tail fan.

Natsu, meanwhile, goes through a trip through Retcon Lane, where the mental image Zeref shows how their village was destroyed by a dragon, killing their parents as well as Natsu... before Zeref brings Natsu back to life as E.N.D. And Zeref gave Natsu to Igneel, which I think we know? Apparently Gajeel, Wendy, Sting and Rogue all hung out with Natsu and their draconic parents, but amnesia is a very convenient thing and none of them remember any of this. There is some talk about 'that child', which I just don't care about. The mental image of Zeref is replaced with the mental image of Sting, who tells Natsu that he's going to bring Natsu to see the true identity of what lurks within Natsu's body.

Meanwhile, the present-day Sting is still a huge loser as always, looking tough but running away from a fight (apparently Freed helped him out off-screen?) and stumbling into Rahkeid and Yukino. Yukino, who's laid with her ass facing us, on the ground, with her clothes sticking onto her skin and questionable fluid (where this that come from?) dripping off everywhere. The close-up of Yukino's face, breathing hard, gasping, crying with even more fluids dripping off her and her 'mind going blank'? Yyyeeeeaaaaah. They're not being subtle with the rape imagery at all, are they.

Sting shows up to kick Rahkeid in the face and apparently it's a dramatic moment that deserves a two-page spread. And Yukino is instantly fine, despite being reduced into nothing but a plot device to anger Sting so he can do something. Man, remember when Yukino was built up to be awesome? Oh, the only other Stellar Spirit Mage who can use the golden keys! Ophiuchus! Nope. She's just there to be useless and be rescued. In other words, like Lucy, but worse.

Sting then pulls a page out of Natsu's playbook, which is to eat the orgasm magic that Rahkeid uses. I really shouldn't have expected anything intelligent or non-repeated from Fairy Tail fights, but really? Is every fight going to end with 'dragon slayer eats some weird magic, then powers up'?

Yeah. It's another disappointing chapter. The flashback isn't anything we don't know, the Lucy scene was dumb, Sting is whatever, and the rape imagery is disturbing.
